24 alternatives to I've built a tiny hand-held keyboard
I bet you didn't knew you can use modelling clay (as opposed to 3d printing) to make nice devices by hand :)
The creator has built a tiny hand-held keyboard using modeling clay rather than 3D printing, demonstrating an alternative approach to device manufacturing. The project is shared on GitHub and falls within the Life &… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

Hey HN, I want to share a personal project: I made a tiny pen-plotted book for my wife. I did everything myself—drawings (with some help from Midjourney), plotting, cutting, and binding. I even used a 3D printer to make a helper tool. It's absolutely over-engineered, but I enjoyed it a lot. Multi-disciplinary projects, especially those with a physical output, are a lot of fun for me. The post covers the process in detail, but if you're interested in anything specific, let me know. Cheers!

I travel a lot for work and can't type for long on my laptop keyboard due to RSI. To solve the problem, I 3D printed a platform for my laptop that I can put a mechanical keyboard on top of without pressing the built-in keys: https://imgur.com/a/mfAYQj6 If you like it, let me know, I'll post the CAD file so you can print it yourself! QWANJI▲174Hey HN! I've built this bit of cuteware (software not solving a problem but just for fun) inspired from the patterns made by swipe typing on mobile devices. To me it seemed like the closest thing to an English version of Kanji and it would be cool to consistently recreate those patterns. The implementation is vanilla js to keep things simple (and from a bit of framework fatigue) I'm keen to see how people use qwanji. Any and all feedback welcome!

This is a little toy project of mine that lets you simulate digital logic graphs. It was inspired by Minecraft's Redstone and the Piet esolang. It's got some serious drawbacks-- you write circuits as PNGs and simulate them with a Python interface. It's slow to run and slow to experiment with. And it is certainly difficult to use for people with any kind of color blindness. But despite that, I hope this can still be a fun toy!

I'm enthralled with using pen plotters to make generative art. Last August at SIGGRAPH, I built an interactive experience for others to see how code can be used to make visual art. The linked blog post is my trials and tribulations of linking a MIDI controller to one of these algorithms and sending its output to a plotter, so that people may witness the end-to-end experience.

Hi HN, I teach tech design history, and one of the key stories I cover is the development of the original iPhone keyboard by Ken Kocienda. Reading about it in his book "Creative Selection" is great, but I wanted my students (and now you!) to actually feel this step in the process. So, I built a web simulator of the "Blob Keyboard", Kocienda's very first attempt at a touchscreen keyboard that actually works, from September 2005: Try the Blob Keyboard: https://juliendorra.github.io/blob-keyboard-simulator/blob-k... - Tap for the middle letter - Swipe left or right for the…
