Introducing the 3D Printed Binary Enigma (10 Enigma) – the ultimate encryption and decryption device, no batteries required! Inspired by the iconic Enigma machines of WWII, this sleek and intuitive device lets you encode and decode messages “effortlessly”. Or how else are we going to send secure messages in the future?

I implemented the Enigma encryption machine and Bombe decryption device in eBPF to honor Alan Turing's legacy. This project uses eBPF to process network packets through virtual Enigma rotors and reflectors, just like the original WWII-era machines. Messages sent through virtual interfaces are not only encrypted but also decrypted in real-time, demonstrating how Turing's pioneering work can be reimagined with modern systems programming. The implementation includes configurable rotors, reflectors, and position settings.

I built this machine so I could generate Bitcoin keys that I could trust. Air-gapped and simple to use and understand (mechanical). The Satoshi 9000 demo: https://youtu.be/bJiOia5PoGE The key value proposition of the machine is that it generates analog randomness in the physical world and converts it into digital (1’s and 0’s) randomness. Seamlessly. But it occurs to me that it may have other uses beyond crypto keys for your own use, such as: * Randomized clinical trials. Clinical trials need a high degree of transparency for ethical reasons; also, for legal reasons should it…

This is a little toy project of mine that lets you simulate digital logic graphs. It was inspired by Minecraft's Redstone and the Piet esolang. It's got some serious drawbacks-- you write circuits as PNGs and simulate them with a Python interface. It's slow to run and slow to experiment with. And it is certainly difficult to use for people with any kind of color blindness. But despite that, I hope this can still be a fun toy!

I recently went on a long walk (to get newborn twins to nap) and ended up having a long discussion with ChatGPT in voice mode; asking it to explain how the Enigma machine worked and clarifying all the errors in my current understanding. I ended up going right back to basics and then subsequently spent ages failing to understand how it was cracked. Anyway, I built this in an attempt to recreate that arc for people (like me) who find Enigma intimidating: 13 stages, ~15 minutes, ending in a sandbox machine and the "no letter encrypts to itself" flaw that doomed it. Built with React + SVG +…

I wanted to make the simplest app to introduce myself and others to quantum computing. Introducing, Schrödinger's Coin. Powered by a simple Hadamard gate[0] on IBM quantum, with this app you can directly interact with a quantum system to experience true randomness. Thoughts? Could you see any use cases for yourself of this? Or, does it inspire any other ideas of yours? Curious what others on HN think! [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_logic_gate#Hadamard_ga...

I built a tiny 8-bit CPU simulator in Python to better understand how computers work at a low level. It visualizes registers, memory, and instructions in real-time, so you can actually see each operation as it happens. You can write simple assembly code and watch how the CPU executes it step by step. The project is mainly for learning and experimentation, but I’d love feedback or ideas for improvement.

Just sharing this project [0] I've worked on a while ago, it's not that interesting but I was proud of making it. It has a CLI and a GUI that is done with Dear ImGui and includes an instruction editor, memory and registers viewer, and a canvas that is manipulated with an extra instruction made specifically for the GUI! This is not my first attempt at a virtual machine implementation, I've done the popular LC-3 VM before [1], check it out if you're interested to see Rust code rather than C++ ;) [0]: https://github.com/faresbakhit/vole-sim [1]:…

_Dimity Jones In Puzzle Castle: An Electronic Escape Novel in Eighty-Nine Ciphertexts_ is a (mostly) fictional story, contained in a single text file, that requires the reader to solve puzzles as they go along, and to use each chapter's solution as a key to decipher the next. Think: escape room in the form of a novel. A computer, and rudimentary coding skills in a language of your choice, will be indispensable for performing the transformations -- and might help with the solving too! My wife, the author, passed away five years ago. This is not the last thing she wrote, but it is the most…
