Hi all, I've talked about glidesort a few times on HN already, but it's finally ready for release. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. An academic paper on glidesort that goes into a lot more detail than the readme is upcoming, but is not ready yet. I will be giving a talk on glidesort tomorrow at FOSDEM 2023 in the Rust Devroom at 16:10, you can seek me out there as well. In other news, I am leaving academia soon, so if you have interesting (Rust) jobs the coming months feel free to approach me.

tl;dr we built an embeddable stream processing engine in Rust using apache DataFusion, check us out at https://github.com/probably-nothing-labs/denormalized Hey HN, We’d like to showcase a very early version of our embeddable stream processing engine called Denormalized. The rise of DuckDB has abundantly made it clear that even for many workloads of Terabyte scale, a single node system outshines the distributed query engines of previous generation such as Spark, Snowflake etc in terms of both performance and cost. Now a lot of workloads DuckDB is used for were normally…

I’ve been experimenting with Rust lately and wanted a project that would help me explore some of its lower-level and performance-oriented features. Inspired by Sebastian Lague’s videos, I decided to implement my own ray tracer from scratch. The initial goal was just to render a simple 3D scene in the browser at a reasonable frame rate. It evolved into a small renderer that can: • Run locally or on the web using wgpu and WebAssembly • Perform mesh rendering with a Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) for acceleration • Simulate both direct and indirect illumination for photorealistic results • Be…

Hi HN, In the past few years I've become more interested in machine learning. Since I'm sure the same is true for many here, I wanted to share this project I've been working on: glowstick uses type-directed metaprogramming to keep track of tensor shapes in Rust's type system and determine which operations are permitted or not at compile time. I find Rust has a lot of strengths when it comes to ML applications, but waiting until runtime to find shape related issues feels a bit strange since normally I don't run the code all that often while developing. Given Rust has fancy types available, I…

I built a browser-based port of fogleman/primitive — a Go CLI tool that approximates images using primitive shapes (triangles, ellipses, beziers, etc.) via a hill-climbing algorithm. The original tool requires building from source and running from the terminal, which isn't exactly accessible. I compiled the core logic to WebAssembly so anyone can drop an image and watch it get reconstructed shape by shape, entirely client-side with no server involved. Demo: https://primitive-playground.taiseiue.jp/ Source:…

My cofounder and I run a startup in oncology, where we handle cancer genomics data. It occurred to me that, thanks to a recent complexity theory result, there's a clever way to run bioinformatics algorithms using far less RAM. I built this Rust engine for running whole-genome workloads in under 100MB of RAM. Runtime is a little longer as a result - O(TlogT) instead of O(T). But it should enable whole-genome analytics on consumer-grade hardware.

Hi HN, I've been building Nucleus, a lightweight Linux container runtime focused on two workloads: ephemeral AI-agent sandboxes and declarative NixOS services. It's a single Rust binary, no daemon. It is not a Docker replacement and not a strict subset of Docker either. I dropped the entire image-and-distribution half (no Dockerfile, no layers, no registry, no pull/push, no persistent storage layer) in exchange for going deeper on isolation and reproducibility. The rootfs is either a directory copied into tmpfs (agent mode) or a Nix-built closure mounted read-only (production mode). If…

Started with a pure JS implementation (still the fastest JS image diff), but wanted to push performance further. I rewrote the core in Rust to make it the fastest open-source single-threaded image diff. On 4K images (5600×3200): ~327ms vs odiff's ~1215ms. Binaries are ~3x smaller too (~700KB vs ~2MB). The core insight: make the cold pass smarter to make the hot pass do less work. Instead of simple pixel equality, the cold pass scans dynamic-sized blocks and marks "problematic" ones - blocks that might contain differences. The hot pass then only runs YIQ perceptual diff and antialiasing check…

After two weeks of planning and figuring out how to manage conversions safely, I have finally published the first version of my crate :) It allows you to specify your own colortypes and easily use the same syntax for converting between your custom color types! I also started working on a custom image type that can do math :)
