With GitHub hosting over 100 million public repositories, this leaderboard highlights the top 0.001% in terms of the number of stars. Stars might not be the perfect metric for adoption—metrics like the number of monthly downloads could be more accurate—but this list still represents some of the most popular and influential projects in the open-source community. Several months ago, I built a "stealth" feature that I could use. It hasn't been advertised, and I've been the only user. I've been working on git-stars.org and created a "Newcomer Ranking" that I think does a better job of discovering new popular projects than GitHub Trending. While GitHub Trending often shows the same established repositories cycling through, my Newcomer Ranking specifically focuses on repositories that are both new AND gaining significant traction recently.

Since everyone seems to be making a github application, I thought I'd share mine. It's an aggregated view of all of a given person's github projects, as well as easyish lookups for linkedin/stackoverflow/hackernews. It attempts to determine both productivity (how much code did this person write?) as well as impact (did anyone care?)
