24 alternatives to Making a Compiler to Prove Tmux Is Turing Complete

You can use features of tmux to implement a Turing-complete instruction set, allowing you to compile code that runs in tmux by moving windows. I feel like I really have to emphasise this: I’m not running a command-line program in tmux, or using tmux to launch a program. I can get tmux to run real co

A developer created a compiler that converts code into tmux commands, demonstrating that the terminal multiplexer is theoretically Turing complete. This project is for programmers interested in esoteric computing and… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. Hey HN, Small OSS project that i created for myself and want to share with the community. It's a declarative, scriptable, terminal-based IDE focussed on agentic engineering. That's a lot of jargon, but essentially its a multi-agent IDE that you start in your terminal. Why is that relevant? Thanks to tmux and SSH, it means that you have a really simple and efficient way to create your own always-on coding setup. Boot into your IDE through ssh, give a prompt to claude and close off your machine. In tmux-ide claude will keep working. The tool is intentionally really lightweight, because I think…

Author here. RMUX started from a frustration: I've used tmux for years and got tired of scraping output with grep and sleeps to automate anything. So I rebuilt the multiplexer from scratch in Rust, with a programmable layer on top. Two surfaces: a tmux-compatible CLI (~90 commands, your keybindings just work), and a typed async Rust SDK on the same daemon — stable pane IDs, structured snapshots, locator-style waits. The idea is Playwright-style automation, but for terminals. Native on Linux, macOS, Windows (real ConPTY, no WSL). Demos and docs at rmux.io. Happy to answer questions about the…

Hey, HN! With all recent agentic workflows being primarily terminal- and tmux-based, I wanted to share a little project I created about decade ago. I've continued to use this as my primary terminal "window manager" and wanted to share in case others might find it useful. I would love to hear about other's terminal-based workflows and any other tools you may use with similar functionality.

A couple of years ago, I written an intro to tmux (https://tmux.github.io/) inside tmuxp's (https://github.com/tony/tmuxp) documentation called The Tao of tmux (https://tmuxp.readthedocs.io/en/latest/about_tmux.html). I'm in the process of turning it into a feature book. I am aiming for a December 23rd, 2016 release and am plugging away full time. I make it available to read on the web for free at https://leanpub.com/the-tao-of-tmux/read. The GitHub is at…

I've been a tmux user for years. When I started running 5-10 Claude Code sessions in parallel, I tried the tools that are out there: Conductor, cmux, the GUI orchestrators. None of them felt right. They either wanted me to leave tmux entirely for a 100MB+ Electron app with its own editor and Git workflow, or they were thin wrappers that didn't solve the actual problem: I need to parallelize my entire development environment, agents, editors, servers, logs, and keep track of all of it. So I built jmux. It turns tmux into a parallel development environment. Every session, every agent, every…

Hello everyone. Claudraband wraps a Claude Code TUI in a controlled terminal to enable extended workflows. It uses tmux for visible controlled sessions or xterm.js for headless sessions (a little slower), but everything is mediated by an actual Claude Code TUI. One example of a workflow I use now is having my current Claude Code interrogate older sessions for certain decisions it made: https://github.com/halfwhey/claudraband?tab=readme-ov-file#s... This project provides: - Resumable non-interactive workflows. Essentially `claude -p` with session support: `cband continue…

I needed to remote control a program (and read it’s output) while that tool should still be fully interactive for the user. Obviously there are things like tmux and more but they emulate an entire terminal. This is simpler in that it just sets up a pty and basic pipes or files to send stuff in and read from it.
