    A featurish, lightweight compass app

Hey HN, I built MBCompass, a lightweight, privacy-friendly compass app for Android. It works fully offline, doesn’t ask for unnecessary permissions (no GPS, no internet), and is open source. Most compass apps out there are bloated or ad-heavy. I wanted something clean, fast, and featurish. So I made this! It’s only ~1.7 in size and uses a low-pass filter to smooth sensor readings. I’d love feedback or thoughts – especially from others building simple, privacy-first apps! https://f-droid.org/packages/com.mubarak.mbcompass/…

Hi everyone! Shortly after publishing my iOS 4 jailbreak last October[1], I got to work on my next hobby project: a from-scratch homebrew GPS receiver, which can solve the user’s location solely from billions of radio antenna samples. I took a commodity SDR (alongside the Python standard library and numpy) and built a signal processing pipeline that can detect and track GPS satellites over many minutes, drop and pick up satellites as they come in and out of view, and precisely determine the user’s position and clock inaccuracy. All told, gypsum can go from a cold start to a fix on the user’s…

I'm working on a GPS track visualizer for quite some time. It shines in hilly and mountaineous terrain (where a 3D view makes more sense), but it also offers quite a lot of Strava-like features (statistics etc.). You can upload your GPX and FIT files manually, or sync directly with Garmin, Coros and Polar. See https://cubetrek.com for the live app and check out some examples there. It's free and opens source. Also, anyone who likes to work with 3D visualizations (especially Babylon.js), let me know if you like to help polish this thing further.

Hi HN! This is a trail companion web app (think AllTrails) I hacked together in a couple weeks time. I was inspired to create this project while training for an extended backpacking trip. My motivation was to create a UI tailored exactly to my liking, and to be able to track my progress along the trail without draining my battery. I also wanted to experiment with PWA technologies. I successfully used it on my five day adventure along the Knobstone Trail in southern Indiana, and even though it's web-based it hardly consumed any battery life on my old first-gen Pixel XL. It's set up currently…

I made a single-serving iPhone app with a floating green arrow that always points to the center of the Milky Way, 26,000 lights years away. It’s weirdly grounding. I’ve never made an app before, so here’s how it worked with ChatGPT.

Hey HN, sharing an npx package that I’ve been working on to help teams automatically document their analytics setups. It crawls any JS/TS codebase and generates a YAML schema that catalogs all the events, properties, and triggers. Currently supporting GA, Amplitude, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Rudderstack, mParticle, PostHog, Pendo, Heap, Snowplow. Let me know if there’s any more I should add to the list! Came out of a personal pain where I was struggling to keep tabs on all the analytics events we had implemented. The “tracking plan” spreadsheets just weren’t cutting it, and I wanted…

Hey HN! We're the creators of Sieve API (https://www.sievedata.com) and we recently built this fun site that folks can play around with. Frontend is built with NextJS + Tailwind UI and backend is our API. It uses ffmpeg in the browser to transcode an uploaded video, chop it to 5 seconds, and then send it to our API endpoint which detects and tracks objects in the video. You can then "select" any object and track it over the video. We thought it'd be a fun thing for the community to play around with while also showing the power of video object tracking!
