Hey Hacker News! This is my first post here. About 5 months ago, I left my job because I was completely burnt out. After taking some time off, I started freelancing. But I found tracking my time to be a real hassle as I kept forgetting to start or stop the timer and often had no idea what I’d worked on. So, I decided to build Taim as a side project, while also working now on some freelancing gigs. Taim is going to be automated time tracking tool for freelancers and teams. It’s designed to make tracking time effortless and accurate, so you can focus on your work and not worry about the clock.…

Howdy, gang; After almost two weeks of sitting in Apple's approval queue, my new app Timebar is finally available. I think it has a pretty innovative UI feature, so I wanted to float it by Hacker News. It's a timer app that turns your Mac's menu bar into a sort of virtual hourglass. Your menu bar starts out tinted blue (or whatever colour you pick) and it slowly drains from right-to-left until your time is up. It works very well for situations where you want to keep track of time, but don't need to be super precise. The menu bar is easy to glance up at, and it doesn't take long to happen…

Care to share a screenshot and the 'killer feature' of any of your personal, self-built productivity tools? eg. I made my own calendar and money-tracker last year - there are no other users, it makes no money, I have no plans to make it public, but it holds my life together :) http://i.imgur.com/h2keJDg.png GREAT BECAUSE... it tells me how much I'm going to get paid this month. Absolutely no ulterior motive here (ie. I'm not canvassing opinions for a productivity app startup or anything), just interested.

Sometimes I need a bit of extra motivation to get through the work day, so made a little macOS menubar item where you put in your daily rate (you can make it whatever you want, pre/post-tax/etc.) and it then shows you how much you've earnt today so far. I got Claude Code to also try to detect when the screen is being observed—it found a private macOS framework called SkyLight that has a function, `SLSIsScreenWatcherPresent`, that returns a boolean if any other process is observing the screen. It reckons that it's the same thing that Apple uses for the purple "screen is being…

Hello, HN! I took a few months off and decided to properly build something I've wanted for a while now. MemKit is the spaced-repetition flashcard app I've always wanted. Here's what I mean: - Minimal friction to use. You can immediately start using the app. You are automatically given an account. You don't have to sign up or type in a username or password. A lot of times I'm reading a book and I only have my phone on me. It's super annoying to log into an app when you get signed out, especially on your phone and especially if you don't use a password manager on your phone. MemKit lets you…

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on a small personal finance tool called Tender for the better part of a year. I got tired of doing expenses by hand - going through several accounts to figure out refunds, subscription cancellations, getting paid back via venmo, etc. I’d get to the point where I’d have to go through months of transactions at a time if I got lazy and fell behind. The workflow in Tender is centered around getting to inbox-zero. Transactions leave the inbox when they’re categorized and there’s a basic rules engine for automation. You can also do things like add notes, set…
