24 alternatives to Miteiru, a Japanese Immersion ElectronJS Video Player

Hi people! It's been about 9 months and I think it's ready for people to try this. This is a Japanese learning desktop video player that is cross-platform, easy to setup, and open source. You might have come across some similar app, but this app + OpenAI's Whisper is a bomb... I'll be maintaining this app and tryna achieve all CJK supported video player.

Miteiru is a cross-platform, open-source desktop video player designed for Japanese language learning. It integrates with OpenAI's Whisper for transcription and subtitle generation. The application is easy to set up… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. The idea is actually quite simple. As a Japanese learner and a coder, I've always wanted there to be an open-source, 100% free for learning Japanese, similar to Monkeytype in the typing community. Unfortunately, pretty much all language learning apps are closed-sourced and paid these days, and the ones that are free have unfortunately been abandoned. But of course, just creating yet another language learning app was not enough - there has to be a unique selling point. And then I thought to myself: why not make it crazy and do what no other language learning app ever did by adding a gazillion…

Hey all, creator of Video.js and co-founder of Mux & Zencoder here. My team and I built this. I hope you like the themes we’ve built so far, and maybe even get inspired to build your own. I know Web Components are in a bit of a drama cycle right now. I’m happy to see them get any attention really. I’ve been pretty bullish on them since ~2013 when I started working with them, at least in the context of a widget like a video player. I’ve even given many related talks on them like this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6Mh84SRoDg). I would never push them for a large app or…

A few years ago, right after high school, I decided to try to make a simultaneous translation app for Android as a side project, it took longer than expected (about 2 years) and I had to make a lot of compromises (I had to use Google's API and therefore make users use a developer key because at the time there were no free solutions for speech recognition and translation that had good quality). At the end of university, I decided to pick it up again and finally, using OpenAi's Whisper for speech recognition and Meta's NLLB for translation (with both running locally on the phone), I managed to…

Hey HN community! I'm one of the lead devs of this project at fal.ai and we created an open source lightweight video editor powered by the latest media AI models. The main goal was to tackle some challenges when dealing with complex media handling and encoding on the browser. It all started as an internal experiment but as we tackled some of the issues it was clear there could be some value sharing it with the open source community. Some of the key points and tech stack details: - It uses IndexedDb, so all data is local (i.e. no auth, no cloud db) - Multiple AI models for video, image, music…

I'm building a video conferencing app designed to facilitate better remote piano lessons. My hope is to solve a lot of the challenges piano tutors and new students deal with when taking lessons through Skype/Zoom. It leverages WebRTC's data transmission to send media, MIDI state, and (eventually) send sheet music files and other musical data. I'm surprised with how well the MVP has worked and would love to hear any feedback or suggestions!

Hello HN. I created a video player for Windows, specialized for language learning. It can generate subtitles in real time using OpenAI Whisper. It can also generate subtitles from any online videos. It is free and open source. I would very much like to get feedback, Thanks. [Github: https://github.com/umlx5h/LLPlayer]

    QWANJI▲174

Hey HN! I've built this bit of cuteware (software not solving a problem but just for fun) inspired from the patterns made by swipe typing on mobile devices. To me it seemed like the closest thing to an English version of Kanji and it would be cool to consistently recreate those patterns. The implementation is vanilla js to keep things simple (and from a bit of framework fatigue) I'm keen to see how people use qwanji. Any and all feedback welcome!

I wanted a proper non-linear video editor built for the web. It always annoyed me how there are practically zero functioning web video editors. And here we are :) Kimu can: - Work with Video, Audio & Text. - Supports Transitions. - Non-Linear Video Editing with z-axis overlays. - Split/trim - Export - A cute AI agent (coming soon!) I'm in uni and I started this project out of sheer annoyance that there are zero good web video editors. It is open-source here (https://github.com/robinroy03/videoeditor). What do y'all think?

Hi HN, Just wanted to share a tool i've been working on to help with my own study routine. It’s a browser extension called Lingoku. The idea is simple: we spend hours browsing the web in English every day. This tool replaces some of the english words with Japanese vocabulary based on your japanese level (Similar to Toucan, but with a better user experience). It’s basically an attempt to make the "i+1" method actually passive, you understand the sentence because it's mostly english, but you pick up Japanese words naturally from the context. It uses an LLM in the backend to make sure the…

10 years ago I began working on Muki, a web-based MIDI and chiptune player which I eventually announced here on HN[0]. It was a fun weekend project. Over the years I received numerous requests from people that wanted more: more music, more features, more playable formats, you name it. Eventually I began working on a complete rewrite of the app (this time for real), and, realizing that each year another chiptune or MIDI website went offline, I decided to start archiving them for preservation. Today, 10 years after the first release, I think it's finally time for the new, nicer version to hit…

Here is the backstory: I used to use YouTube Music, but then I deleted my Google account. I didn't want Spotify because I hate it for various reasons, and at the same time I wanted to show off my programming skills. So here we are. --- On the client: solidjs + tailwindcss + minisearch. IndexedDB as the database. One web worker to download audio to OPFS. Another web worker for indexing with minisearch. On top of this a service worker to precache static assets and make the app work offline. On the server: bun + astro + sqlite + ffmpeg. Full-text search is implemented with fts5. Astro Actions…

It's an open source video editor designed for motion effects and versatility. developed with electronjs / TypeScript, FFmpeg, Litjs. I'm currently focusing on making it easier to edit long-form videos. Specifically, adding subtitles to podcast episodes or creating short-form content from YouTube videos. And I’m also developing several extensible utilities. For example, recording video with a floating webcam—similar to Loom—or using LLMs to make cut editing easier. To make all this possible, I believe the first step is to build a versatile, general-purpose video editor. Demo :…

Hi Hackernews Community, Have long been a fan of yours. Waited long to perfect my video/audio translation product as a solopreneur. Now, we have a testable product with 10,000+ monthly users. We are not perfect yet but we provide a ton of features. We provide AI-generated subtitles. We let the user edit the subtitles and timestamps. User can edit the translated audio/video unlimited times without additional fees. We are in the process of making voice cloning free for all users, hopefully completing this weekend. We are launching a chrome extension and mobile app too. Though we…
