Hey HN, I build "How Loud Is My Hotel?" as a simple way to check for possible loud noise near a hotel (or any other address) before booking it. I've had some negative experiences in the past so this automatically checks for things like nearby Clubs, Police Stations with sirens, big roads, railroads etc. and gives you a "noise score" based on them. It's free, works worldwide and needs no account. It estimates outside noise risk rather than measuring decibels, so building insulation and temporary noise aren’t included.

I built a free, no-registration noise evidence generator for tenant noise complaints. Features: - Supports 27 US cities with accurate noise ordinances - Real-time recording + professional court-ready PDF reports - 100% local processing (no data upload, privacy-first) - Auto day/night noise limit detection - Completely free (10 PDF generations/day) Why: As a tenant dealing with noise issues, I was frustrated that existing tools either required subscriptions or uploaded data to servers. This tool is: - Totally free, no hidden costs - No registration or installation required - All…

For the past few months, I've been working on a website that answers two different questions: - Where in my city have the best travel times to all the things and people I care about? - Given a listing, how far is it from all the things and people I care about? Personally this was fueled by my own frustrations when I was apartment hunting in NYC. I was frustrating to have to juggle so many Google Maps tabs when I was evaluating a listing, and it was also annoying to not have full confidence that I was even searching in the right places. I wanted to be close to work, a Trader Joe's, and a…

I’ve always liked having background noise while working or falling asleep, but I got frustrated that most “white noise” or ambient sound apps are either paywalled, stuffed with ads, or try to upsell subscriptions for basic features. So I made Ambi, a small iOS app with a clean interface and a set of freely available ambient sounds — rain, waves, wind, birds, that sort of thing. You can mix them, adjust volume levels, and just let it play all night or while you work. Everything works offline and there are no hidden catches. It’s something I built for myself first, but I figured others might…

311 is NYC's consolidated line for non-emergency local government services. They'll forward complaints to the correct department, everything from missed trash pickup to apartments without heat or hot water. I was browsing through their data and was surprised to discover that more than a quarter of all complaints -- hundreds of thousands per year -- are noise related. I built NoisyNYC on top of the noise-related data. No plans for commercialization, this is a small side project.

The skinny: Katy Perry, Very Bad Trip, How I Met Your Mother and maybe a couple personal experiences... Many of us have experimented wild nights and tried to piece together what happened the next morning. Well, this is over. Last Night...? records your location automatically so that you can check out your route the next morning. If you want to have a look: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/last-night.../id466239544?ls=1&mt=8 I think many of us have had this experience already: when you go out, have a great night, a bit too many drinks too, and wake up the next morning wondering what…
