Products that do what Placekey – An ID for Every Place does

Hi, HN, I'm Roshan and I'm part of the team that's launching the Placekey today at https://placekey.io. It is a free and open universal standard identifier we built so that data pertaining to places can be shared across organizations easily. A Placekey is a short identifier that has Address and POI sections detailing What is at a place and a section describing Where on the globe the place is. Eventually, there will be a Placekey for every place in the world, even those without postal addresses. US geospatial data from a large array of partners…

We’re thrilled to announce PlaceKit, a worldwide geocoding API and toolkit! It’s the successor of Algolia Places, a discontinued product. Nico (my co-founder) and I worked at Algolia for 3 and 6 years respectively before launching PlaceKit. Unlike big competitors Google Places and Mapbox, it’s a single REST API, with a unique and transparent per-request pricing. PlaceKit combines OpenStreetMap, local datasets and the Algolia engine into a unique sub 50ms worldwide address search. We’ve made our JS libraries from scratch to make them lightweight, customizable, and compatible with any stack.…

For the past few months, I've been working on a website that answers two different questions: - Where in my city have the best travel times to all the things and people I care about? - Given a listing, how far is it from all the things and people I care about? Personally this was fueled by my own frustrations when I was apartment hunting in NYC. I was frustrating to have to juggle so many Google Maps tabs when I was evaluating a listing, and it was also annoying to not have full confidence that I was even searching in the right places. I wanted to be close to work, a Trader Joe's, and a…

Hi HN, I built a little tool to help me get better at remembering country locations on the map: https://learn-worldmap.netlify.app/ It's made from plain HTML/CSS/JS, and not intended to make any money or anything. Just thought that maybe someone else may enjoy it. Also of course happy about any feedback! Cheerz.

Hello HN, with mapname you can create a unique name for any particular point of interest as in prefix(id).group(optional).suffix. Once a mapname created then this can be used as an address, discovered and socialised. Mapname is free and has no advertisements. At onboarding pick a unique prefix. That is all about onboarding. Users can also organise collection of places with just two words, for example coffee shops i like at NY is abc.1 or I have visited Melbourne last year where you can see at abc.melbourne Mapname designed as an anonymous Social Network where users particular perspective…

Hi HN, I made a web game to practice country locations a while ago and HN liked it, so I thought I'd post my updated version as well. As for how the game works and feels, I'd really recommend you checking it out for yourself, it's free, no signup, no ads. The tech stack is Vue + ts + Tailwind/Daisy for the looks. The learning algorithm is a slight modification of the ts version of FSRS. If you have anything to add, it's open source as well (https://github.com/koljapluemer/learn-worldmap), although not well documented yet. In the end it's just a little sideproject,…

A little while back I remember seeing a user on a certain anonymous imageboard asking for an invite to a selective email host. Only after a few minutes did the guy realize the perplexity of the situation. How do you insure against a race condition in a public forum with no way to direct message? Luckily, he nabbed the invite code, but it got me thinking about using PGP to provide a solution. This is meant to be a rough PoC and the UX is definitely not ready for the average Joe, but the functionality I'd like to think is there. What catbox.moe is to dropbox is what I'd like this to eventually…

Hey! I'm a solo developer having fun learning Go. I have a side hustle and wanted to implement currency localization. I could use existing IP databases, but hosting on serverless is slow. So I built my own. I was surprised how fun it can be to use Go, and it's fast. Thankfully, Go's speed makes up for my dodgy code. Anyway, I'd love to get some feedback on my website/API. After a few weeks of testing and losing money on ads, I'm confident it's very reliable. This isn't a promo. It's basicly free (30k lookups/month), so there's no need to pay. Any advice or tips on how to grow and…
