Encryption without keys: Control your access via memory

  1. 1SF

I built SecretMemoryLocker (https://secretmemorylocker.com), a file encryption tool that generates keys dynamically from your answers to personal questions instead of using a static master password. This makes offline brute-force attacks much more difficult. Think of it as a password manager that meets mnemonic seed recovery, but without storing any sensitive keys on disk. Why? I kept losing master passwords and wanted a solution that wasn't tied to a single point of failure. I also wanted to create a "digital legacy" that my family could access only under specific conditions. The…

Due to bike-induced concussions, I've been worried for a while about losing my memory and not being able to log back in. I combined shamir secret sharing (hashicorp vault's implementation) with age-encryption, and packaged it using WASM for a neat in-browser offline UX. The idea is that if something happens to me, my friends and family would help me get back access to the data that matters most to me. 5 out of 7 friends need to agree for the vault to unlock. Try out the demo in the website, it runs entirely in your browser!

Hi! I got tired of setting up tools I can't explain to a team in a few words like sops or git-crypt, just to store few files with environment variables or secrets, so I built lockenv as a simple alternative. It's basically a password-protected vault file you commit to git. No gpg keys, no cloud, just lockenv init, set a password, and lock/unlock the secrets. This tool integrates with OS keyring, so you're not typing passwords constantly. Should work on Mac/Linux/Windows, but I tested it only on linux so far. I am not trying to replace any mature / robust solution, just…

Hi HN, Bastion Enclave is an experiment in removing centralized trust from password management by eliminating server-side state entirely. Instead of storing an encrypted vault or syncing secrets through a backend, Bastion computes credentials deterministically on-the-fly using explicit cryptographic inputs. Given the same master entropy, service name, username, and version counter, the same password is reproduced across platforms. There is no account system, no database, and no persistent server storage — the server serves static code only. Password generation uses domain-separated salts and…

Hey HN, I've been working on Hansel [1] (an encrypted personal data store you can query with agents), and there wasn't a good way to use the modern macOS Data Protection Keychain. Electron's safeStorage [2] uses the legacy file-based keychain, which allows other apps/agents to query it with the `security` CLI. Not great when you have a dozen agents running in the background! The Data Protection Keychain is nice because it limits access via code-signing access groups and lets you set access rules like Touch ID and/or password. 1: https://hansel.so/ 2.…

So the main purpose here is to show _a_ way that session-token theft can be mitigated. Clearly, this isn't NSA proof or something you'd use to secure a BL5 containment facility, but to prevent session-jacking; if feels like it could help a lot, and would be pretty quick and easy to roll out if an IDP wanted to implement it.

Hello HN! We are developers and security researchers making tools for developers to encrypt data at an application level while maintaining sole control of their keys. We believe that data should always be encrypted unless it is part of an active computation. Encryption is relatively easy, but key management is challenging. There are plenty of encryption tools and SDKs that are out there (Hashicorp Vault, AWS KMS etc.) but we are focusing on ease and speed of implementation, developer experience and self custody of keys. A few months ago, we quit our jobs and started full time on Phase. So…
