Inspired by the ongoing call-to-action by the Internet Archive team over at /r/DataHoarder [1], I've decided I want to try to preserve all cybersecurity related subreddits. [2] For people that don't know what's going on: There's a likelihood that the try to monetize the Reddit API will lead to a lot of moderators quitting the platform, and it could be that a lot of subreddits are going to be set on private and/or their threads are going to be deleted. Hey everyone! I've built an open-source Android app that allows you to browse Reddit without using their API. It is built on the library I've published here earlier. Basically, the app uses JSON feeds of Reddit to replicate various endpoints. What this means is that you can browse Reddit without an account and get posts, comments, images, videos and nsfw contents without having to deal with ads etc. In it's current state it has just the basic functionality and I am planning to add more features soon. This is my attempt at helping those who are trying to ditch reddit but have not been satisfied with the content from Lemmy or haven't been able to find the corresponding communities. There are two sides to this project. The first one is that I have setup a Lemmy instance (alien.top) which is mirroring some of the reddit content from subreddits that I wanted to follow with the comments. I created this chrome extension for myself where I track my own behavior locally and recommend myself content from platforms I want content from (youtube/twitter/quora/etc) in a feed. I made it public just in case anyone else was interested. I would rather have control over my own algorithm and own the data. Also, it gives me flexibility. Turns out I do like these feeds just not when I don't own it haha. Let me know what you think of my implementation?

When Reddit killed 3rd party apps, I uploaded a web viewer I have been using for myself to access Reddit (without 99 popups) to Github pages for everyone to use. I posted about it on Lemmy and it shot to the front page. Hey guys, As Reddit makes it harder to use their API, I decided to make a wrapper around their undocumented JSON feeds. This allows you to get data from Reddit without authentication. This is only suitable for getting public data. I hope this helps someone out there. I'm also planning to make an android app via CapacitorJS using this library. I'm a solo dev. A few years ago, I got addicted to Reddit. Spent months in that loop. Being a programmer, I thought I'd be clever. Redirected Reddit's domain to nowhere in my DNS file. Worked great until I'd just... open the file and undo it 20 minutes later. So I made it irreversible. Locked the DNS file so it can't be edited unless I boot my Mac in safe mode. And if I do that, there's a script that instantly locks it again. Haven't used Reddit since last year. Problem solved, right? Wrong. I just replaced Reddit with Twitch and YouTube. Hey HN! I've been hacking on a project and figured I'd share it with the community. CrowdView is a search engine for niche forums and message boards (MetaFilter, HN, Reddit, and 3000+ forums). Like many of you, I find Google results to be full of SEO spam and have resorted to adding "site:reddit.com" or "site:news.ycombinator.com" to all my queries (since 2015!). Otherwise, it's really hard to figure out "what does a genuine, real life human think about this thing?".
