Products that do what Toolbox: Run FFmpeg, Imagemagick, 7Zip and Friends in the Browser does

I got sick of sketchy online converter sites that phone home and may keep your files and walking non-technical friends through brew/apt/choco installs every time they need ffmpeg or imagemagick and telling them what command to run. So I built Toolbox, a 100% open source site that compiles my most-used command-line tools to WebAssembly and runs them fully client-side: - FFmpeg (video + audio) - ExifTool (metadata) - 7-Zip (archive/zip/rar/7z) - ImageMagick - Pandoc Roadmap: - Batch mode - Shareable presets. Complex commands can be saved as URLs so you can send a…

Hey HN, just wanted to share my success story with CompressX, my FFmpeg wrapper for macOS. For those who may not be familiar, FFmpeg is a powerful tool for converting, streaming, and recording audio and video content. I started CompressX as a weekend project to serve my 9-5 jobs, primarily to compress demo videos for uploading to GitLab and sharing with my colleagues. It took me 2 weeks to make the first working version. I shared the demo on Twitter and the reaction was extraordinary. People loved it, they said that I was bringing the Pied Piper to life. Four months later, I hit the $9,000…

You ever just want to shrink a video… and suddenly you’re buried in flags, half-broken StackOverflow answers, and 10 tabs open just to figure out one command? That’s been me. Every. Single. Time. So I built FFmpeg Pages — a dead-simple collection of the commands I kept searching for. No fluff, no digging, just the stuff that actually works.

I built a CLI tool that lets you do common video/audio operations without remembering ffmpeg syntax. Instead of: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vf "fps=15,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos" -loop 0 output.gif You write: ff convert video.mp4 to gif More examples: ff compress video.mp4 to 10mb ff trim video.mp4 from 0:30 to 1:00 ff extract audio from video.mp4 ff resize video.mp4 to 720p ff speed up video.mp4 by 2x ff reverse video.mp4 There are similar tools that use LLMs (wtffmpeg, llmpeg, ai-ffmpeg-cli), but they require API keys, cost money, and have latency. Ez FFmpeg is different: - No AI – just…

I found that I am using ChatGPT more and more to get the FFmpeg command I need, but the process can be a bit tedious: copy-pasting commands, dealing with input file names and locations, making sure the prompt contains enough info about the input files. This site attempts to solve that. You just describe what you want to do, pick the input files and an LLM (currently DeepSeek) generates the FFmpeg command. You can then run it directly in your browser or use the command elsewhere.

Hi, I'm a developer and first time i shipped the real product after observing the startups and indie hackers community for years. I had made so many useless apps [you should check my website https://ansh.life], but this time I built a very useful product that has a number of super easy-to-use tools in one app for video, music, and photo files. Users can compress, convert, resize, and do so much more with easy-to-use tools. Background: I developed a frame-by-frame video cropper to upload cropped landscape videos to Instagram Reels. However, it required FFmpeg, and as a noob video…

Dear HN, I’m excited to show case a personal project. It has helped me quite a bit with my home lab, I hope it can help you with yours too! ffmpeg-over-ip has two components, a server and a client. You can run the server in an environment with access to a GPU and a locally installed version of ffmpeg, the client only needs network access to the server and no GPU or ffmpeg locally. Both and client and the server need a shared filesystem for this to work (so the server can write output to it, and client can read from it). In my usecase, smb works well if your (GPU) server is a windows machine,…

Built a browser-based FFmpeg editor that runs entirely client-side via WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device -- all processing happens in a Web Worker. Works offline as an installable PWA after first load.

Hello Friends, I have built a new video editor app that generates ffmpeg commands to get the edited video. This gives you flexibility to use it in scripts etc. for your video editing workflows and makes editing tasks smooth by letting you visually adjust video elements that are difficult to adjust in commandline. Demo is here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSvazNBEfTc Link is here - https://newbeelearn.com/tools/videoeditor/ Features are - video, image, text editing - adjustable timeline and layers - adjust position, size , alignment, font size…

I originally added this to my site to speed up my video editing process. Last year I started a youtube channel and for some of my longer videos it's annoying to rely on youtube or capcut to transcribe when Whisper is open source. Capcut also recently updated their T&Cs to say they own your content if you use their app, so I cancelled my subscription. Another use-case I have is recording my claude prompts as audio, transcribing them, and then pasting them into my terminal. I mostly work on the CLI (claude, ffmpeg, whisper), but I wanted to make a browser version. Not reinventing the wheel…

As I worked on my personal projects, I kept running into the same problem: There wasn’t a simple, local way to convert screen recordings into GIFs that look clean in a README.md. Recordings don’t render inline on GitHub READMEs, and I didn’t want to rely on bulky video editors or upload my files to some sketchy ad-filled site. So, I wrote a small script. I found myself using it so often that I turned it into a proper tool: minimal, local, and built for developers who care about good documentation. I’m not some elite hacker — just a dev who wanted a better way to share demos. Thought others…

I went nuts on Sunday after stumbling on this animator script for the automatic branch: https://github.com/Animator-Anon/Animator And then it's a ton of keyframing. I also found that the timings all have to be earlier than the timestamp you want to account for how long it takes to denoise to your new scene - so like .4 gives smoother but longer, .7 is snappy. To get stuff to keep showing up and stay dynamic you can zoom out continuously, it needs a UI, badly. If you're on windows you'll need ffmpeg too. I watched this when it came out last week:…

Hello HN! I’m a bachelors student pursuing Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Signal processing and during the year I had the goal to build my first AI Tool and launch it. I got inspired by how capable Whisper is, and combined the Whisper CPP Bindings along with FFMPEG.Wasm to create a tool that is capable of transcribing and captioning video files that contain one or more video tracks. Along with that, I’ve also added the support for transcribing audio files with the option to export those outputs as .SRT, .WebVTT or simply a text file. All done privately on a user’s web browser with…

Hey HN! I built Topic2Manim to automate the creation of educational videos like those from 3Blue1Brown. The workflow is simple: 1. Give it any topic (e.g., "how ChatGPT works") 2. An LLM generates an educational script divided into scenes 3. LLM generates Manim code for each scene 4. FFmpeg concatenates everything into a final video Currently working on TTS integration for narration! Would love feedback on the approach and ideas for the TTS integration
