24 alternatives to We built a managed Kubernetes provider at half the cost of AWS
Since there’s a few discussions recently on $4 VPSes we thought you might be interested in Symbiosis, a cheaper and simpler managed k8s provider. Supported features include external LBs, encrypted+replicated storage and autoscaler. Infrastructure can be managed with UI, CLI, Terraform or Pulumi. Control planes are free of charge and a 1vCPU/2GB node goes for $6 per month. We’re live in Germany right now and we’re expanding into US during 2023. Feel free to try it out and leave a comment.
Symbiosis is a managed Kubernetes provider offering lower costs than major cloud providers. It includes external load balancers, encrypted replicated storage, and autoscaling, with infrastructure manageable via UI… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. We built a managed Kubernetes provider at half the cost of AWS launched in 2023; newer entries below may have overtaken it.

Hello HN! I've been working on Canine for about a year now. It started when I was sick of paying the overhead of using stuff like Heroku, Render, Fly, etc to host some web apps that I've built. At one point I was paying over $400 a month for hosting these in the cloud. Last year I moved all my stuff to Hetzner. For a 4GB machine, the cost of various providers: Heroku = $260 Fly.io = $65 Render = $85 Hetzner = $4 (This problem gets a lot worse when you need > 4GB) The only downside of using Hetzner is that there isn’t a super straightforward way to do stuff like: - DNS management / SSL…

Hey HN: Kaveh here, the founder of https://www.usage.ai/ We help companies drive down AWS EC2 spend. Why? Because the way it's done now is a pain. DevOps and Software Engineers end up spending time managing costs rather than focusing on business problems. Previous to founding Usage, I worked on high-performance computing research at JP Morgan Chase and as a software engineer at a number of smaller startups. Here's how it works: We are typically brought in by a DevOps manager to cut AWS EC2 costs. The app is entirely self-service and the savings are generated automatically,…

hey guys. the other day i was migrating hosting providers and i just needed something not too heavy and convenient to spin up my backups for awhile and realised there is almost nothing out there. kimchi hasn't been updated for years and cockpit is heavy. so here's something i came up with in a couple hours because of a sudden urge, nothing fancy just basic creation with cloud init, lifecycle management and image/storage, but it's modern-ish and it compiles to a 8.4mb binary inclusive of the embedded web UI, CLI and API, and only dep is libvirt.

This is the newest update to my CLI tool to quickly create cheap Kubernetes clusters in Hetzner Cloud. This update adds autoscaling support, so clusters created with this tool now can behave similar to managed Kubernetes clusters, which I think is awesome. I received a lot of feedback since the last update so I hope anyone interested could try the new version as well. Thanks a lot for the feedback so far! Hey HN, I'm Brandon, a solo dev, and I built KubeForge - a visual editor for Kubernetes deployments that helps you build and validate YAML configs. Origin Story: Over the past couple weeks, I got fed up manually writing Kubernetes YAMLs, especially when working with nested structures like containers, env, and volumeMounts. Even small typos or misaligned fields added lost time to broken deploys. So I started hacking together a tool to visualize the structure of Kubernetes objects based on the OpenAPI schema. That prototype quickly turned into a full manifest builder. What KubeForge does: -…

Hey folks, we built a Kubernetes operator for Renovate and wanted to share it. Instead of running Renovate as a cron job or relying on hosted services, this operator lets you manage it as a native Kubernetes resource with CRDs. You define your repos and config declaratively, and the operator handles scheduling and execution inside your cluster. No external dependencies, no SaaS lock-in, no webhook setup. The whole thing is open source and will stay that way – there's no paid tier or monetization plan behind it, we just needed this ourselves and figured others might too. Would love to hear…

We launched Infracost on HN five years ago (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26064588) where our CLI generated cost estimates for infra-as-code, e.g. "this Terraform PR adds $400/mo". The idea was to shift cloud costs (FinOps) left, so engineers get visibility of costs before deployment and make better decisions. Earlier this year we started seeing agent traffic in our logs and it looked like coding agents were calling our CLI. But that CLI wasn't designed with coding agents in mind. We went down a philosophical rabbit hole to see if a CLI is even needed anymore given…
