The last two weeks of Console [1] I interviewed people who are not from the U.S. about their open-source projects. This got me thinking, are people outside the U.S. more prone to contribute to open-source than U.S. developers? So, I went looking by pulling in the location data for 500,000 publicly available repos to answer this question. Why 500,000? Well, GitHub rate limits their API to roughly 1 request per second [2], and I didn't want to wait a year to write about my findings, or abuse their API. Several months ago, I built a "stealth" feature that I could use. It hasn't been advertised, and I've been the only user. Over the past few weeks I've been working on a small application to view trending repos on GitHub. I built the PWA[1] with React, Next.js and GraphQL .. but what's interesting is the application is only using React server side, meaning the client side javascript is only a few lines code adding some event listeners and registering a service worker for offline capability. Since everyone seems to be making a github application, I thought I'd share mine. It's an aggregated view of all of a given person's github projects, as well as easyish lookups for linkedin/stackoverflow/hackernews. It attempts to determine both productivity (how much code did this person write?) as well as impact (did anyone care?) Morning HN. I had an issue recently where I wanted to share some private Github repositories with a larger audience than usual (25k+) on Youtube and was simply considering making my code public. Came up with an idea to build a middleman service that handles user access/management, generate share links and even paywall individual repos.
