If there is an ad it temporarily manipulates the video; Mutes the volume, sets speed to 10x, and skips it if there is a button. Our team is filled with technologists and creators, and when we record and edit videos, 80% of the time is spent chopping up the video, removing silences, and picking the right takes. So we decided to build a tool that did that for you — or at least get you there most of the way! Our initial implementation is somewhat naïve and uses a user configurable silence threshold that just reads in volume levels. In the future, we’d like to use a frequency-based approach that focuses on the human voice. We’re also open to ideas, so let us know if you have any!

There was recently a Show HN for a program that lets one remove silence from video files [0]. I was almost certain that ffmpeg could do this... But after searching for it, it turned out I was wrong: ffmpeg can't do this out of the box, and also can't read input from an EDL file [1]. So I set out to write a solution, as simple as possible: produce a list of select filters that are applied to video and audio, and retain only the non-silent parts. I have made a browser extension that plays only the audio, blocking the video on YouTube, YouTube Music and all embedded YouTube videos in third party sites. It can also hide the thumbnails and avatars and skip the ads. It is compatible with Chrome, most of the Chromium browsers and Firefox. Additionally, it can be installed in smartphones using the Kiwi browser that supports extensions from the Chrome Web Store. I released the extension back in October, 2019 but from now the source code is available on GitHub as well.
