A touch sensor you can 3D print in any shape and size

We just released a touch sensor that you can make at home with just a 3D printer, some magnets and hall effect sensors! Would love to hear the community's questions, thoughts and comments.

What it does

eFlesh: Highly customizable Magnetic Touch Sensing using Cut-Cell Microstructures

If human experience is any guide, operating effectively in unstructured environments—such as homes and offices—requires robots to sense the forces they apply during physical interaction. Yet, the lack of a versatile, accessible, and easily customizable tactile sensor has led to fragmented, sensor-specific solutions in general-purpose robotic manipulation—and in many cases, to force-unaware, sensorless approaches. With eFlesh, we aim to bridge this gap by introducing a magnetic tactile sensor that is low-cost, easy to fabricate, and highly customizable. Building an eFlesh sensor requires only four components: a hobbyist 3D printer, off-the-shelf magnets (costing less than $5), a simple CAD…from e-flesh.com

Put this touch sensor on a robot and learn super precise tasks2024 · any-skin.github.io · ▲390

We just released a very excited touch sensor that finally simplifies touch sensing for robotics. Our most exciting result: Learned visuotactile policies for precise tasks like inserting USBs and credit card swiping, that work out-of-the-box when you replace skins! To the best of our knowledge, this has never been shown before with any existing tactile sensor. Why is this important? For the first time, you could now collect data and train models on one sensor and expect them to generalize to new copies of the sensor -- opening the door to the kind of large foundation models that have…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

  • I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
