An AVR based 8-bit Microcomputer

DAN64 is a open software and open hardware project to build an 8-bit microcomputer using an AVR microcontroller.

An AVR based 8-bit Microcomputer launched on April 6, 2015 with 43 votes, #975 of 3,600 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 11 years on.

In plain words

DAN64 is an open-source hardware and software project that builds an 8-bit microcomputer using an AVR microcontroller, specifically the ATmega328. It is designed for electronics hobbyists and learners interested in understanding microcontroller design, prototyping, and PCB fabrication. The project demonstrates practical applications of electronics fundamentals, signaling protocols, and hardware interfaces through a complete microcomputer implementation.

This is my first serious attempt to learn electronics. DAN64 is my first project and it has been a discovery process during 3 months of my free time. I had to learn a lot of things I didn’t know much about, from basic electronics to the details of the AVRs -and specifically the ATmega328-, and a whole world of things in between such as signalling, protocols, interfaces, modulation and demodulation, SDKs, EDA software, prototyping, PCB fabrication, etc. I’m certain that in this project I’m doing many stupid things and I’m sure my approach to solving some of the problems is not the best, but in my discharge I can only say: it works! (to some extent at least). I got lots of gotcha! moments,…from usebox.net

Hi! me and my friends together built an 8 bit CPU implemented in Logisim purely from scratch. The control unit of this system does not implement the generic microcode ROM or any kind of RAM. This was made purely from discrete logic gates and coded the system to run different programs. key features: Custom 16-instruction Harvard ISA, 8-bit fixed format, 4 general purpose registers Hardwired control unit built entirely from AND/OR gate logic matrix Dual-phase clocking to eliminate race conditions Bootstrap Control Unit that cold-boots via ROM-to-RAM transfer Early-exit conditional…

The core question: how did HP's scientific calculators actually work at the gate level? That rabbit hole led to building one from scratch. The architectural decision everything else follows from: a decimal calculator should store numbers as BCD — one decimal digit per 4-bit nibble. A standard byte-oriented CPU (Z80, 6502) fights that layout constantly. So I designed a small custom CPU in Verilog where 4 bits is the natural data width and memory is nibble addressable. What the project covers: - Custom CPU: Harvard architecture, 12-bit ISA, 8-state execution FSM, hardware stack guard with a…
