I've created an interactive tutorial that teaches how AI models work. I set myself the goal of making it approachable enough that my 11 year old son Isaac can fully understand it. I've created an interactive tutorial that teaches how AI models work. I set myself the goal of making it approachable enough that my 11 year old son Isaac can fully understand it. The tutorial aims to be easily understood by anyone who understands basic math, and yet give them a deep intuitive sense of not just how AI works but why it works the way it does. It does this using a series of interactive playgrounds that let the reader play with each idea. Currently there are 9 chapters, starting from scratch and ending with transformers. I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it.
