ASCII Royale

Terminal battle royale — peer-to-peer over iroh, no server. Pure ASCII, 8-bit sound, playable over SSH.

ASCII Royale launched on June 12, 2026 with 7 votes, #1,808 of 22,646 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches.

What it does

Terminal battle royale — p2p over iroh, no central server. Play instantly: ssh -p 48958 [email protected] · or play.royale.boxd.sh · or 'ascii-royale play'. - chad/ascii-royale

A battle royale you play in your terminal. Pure text, peer-to-peer over iroh — no game server, no accounts, one binary. ssh -p 48958 [email protected] That's it — no install, no account. Pick a call sign and you're dropping onto the island with whoever's online. (Blank password — just press Enter. Prefer a browser? play.royale.boxd.sh .) Up to 16 combatants drop onto a procedurally generated ASCII island. Scavenge weapons, dodge bullets you can actually see coming, and outrun the storm. Last one standing wins. Bots fill empty slots, so it's playable solo too. An actual match (sped up ~2x): the drop and first loot, a mid-game scrap, and the finale as the storm swallows the island. Rendered…from github.com

Run `ssh devzat.hackclub.com` to try it out! The repo is here: https://github.com/quackduck/devzat (golang). It has markdown and emoji support, DMs, channels, and it can show images too. You can send code, and it gets syntax highlighted (you can change the theme). You can ping people like so: @user and it sends them a \a, which should play an audible sound if the terminal allows it. There's inbuilt games and rainbow names and a lot of other small things I don't remember right now. You might find the auth system interesting: it's based on a hash of ssh pubkey (bans use…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • Today, I’m proud to announce Homebrew 6.0.0. The most significant changes since 5.1.0 are a new tap trust security mechanism, the new faster, smaller, default internal Homebrew JSON API, sandboxing on Linux, better defaults informed by our user survey, many brew bundle improvements, improved performance and initial support for macOS 27 (Golden Gate). Happy to discuss any questions here!

  • Hi HN! I was super frustrated at apps like tiktok and wechat preventing me from saving or downloading the animated gifs, so I made a little tool to turn a screen recording into a slack-sized emoji. Hope you get some value from this!
