Bliss – A library for making smart audio playlists, written in Rust

An open-source music analyzing library that is used to compute distance between songs

Bliss – A library for making smart audio playlists, written in Rust launched on January 4, 2022 with 5 votes, #1,452 of 2,891 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 4 years on.

What it does

bliss is a library designed to make smart playlists, by evaluating distance between songs. It is mainly useful integrated in existing audio players, or for research purposes. You can see it in action for MPD through blissify for instance. The main algorithm works by first extracting common audio descriptors (tempo, timbre, chroma…) from each song into a set of numeric features per song. Once this is done, the distance between two songs can be simply computed using the existing distance() method (which is just an euclidean distance, really). Playlists can then be made by putting together close songs (see "usage" section for more info). bliss is written in Rust (see the crate ) uses ffmpeg…from lelele.io

This is an web audio experiment I've been wanting to do for a long time. Basically an ambient music composition, but all the sound elements are laid out in space, and that musical space can be explored freely. It's definitely inspired by in-world music that sometimes appears in games. I basically took that concept, keeping the music aspect, and dropping the entire "game" aspect. I also turned it into a more "traditional" non-interactive album, but since I started with code, why not program the whole thing? Had a blast making the entire album from code, the complete source for the album is…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • History: Last year I had to replace the tire on my bike, and I was surprised how difficult it was to find a suitable new tire. There were a lot of numbers written on the casing, so I googled what they meant. In the end I was successful, but I didn't want to do the same work again for the next bike after I've forgotten the details. So I wrote this website. Technically, the web page is kept very simple, no frameworks, no templates, no website builder. It uses HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, and it privides a responsive layout for mobile usage. I'm happy to receive feedback. If you have tried the…
