Coffee in the Sun

What it does

Stop guessing, start sunning. Coffee in the Sun shows a live 3D shadow map to find your perfect sunny spot at any café, anywhere in the world. Plan ahead with the time-travel feature.

Coffee in the Sun draws real building shadows on a live map, so you can see which terraces, benches and pitches are in the sun right now or at any time you choose. Free on iOS and Android.

Coffee in the Sun projects the shadow of every mapped building from its real height and the live position of the sun. Point the map at any street, anywhere, and see exactly where the light falls. A forecast tells you whether the sun is out over your city. That is not the question you have standing on a street corner at four o'clock, deciding where to sit. The answer changes from one side of the road to the other, and again halfway down it. That is the scale the app works at. Move the map forward and see where the light will be at five, or next Saturday, before you decide where to meet. There is no curated list of good terraces behind this. A map of cafes that are in the sunJul 2026 · sunny.coffee · ▲8

I wanted to sit outside for coffee but there was no way to see which cafes are in the sun right now. So I built a map that shows which cafes, benches, and outdoor seats are in the sun vs. shade at any time of day. It ray-marches building shadows live in a WebGL shader over a MapLibre map. I also pre-index all places from OpenStreetMap into H3 hex cells and serve them as static JSON on Cloudflare R2, so the client just fetches the cells in view and no backend is needed. Feedback welcome, especially on shadow accuracy in your city. Currently only buildings and trees are taken into account when…

  I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights▲1,539

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

  Workout.cool – Open-source fitness coaching platform▲827

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
