Coupling - A Language Learning App for Couples

Happy Valentine's Day! I built a language learning app designed specifically for couples, where one partner helps the other learn a new language in a fun, personalized way. My partner is originally from China, and I wanted to learn Mandarin and Cantonese to speak to her family. But learning through other apps, I found many words sounded awkward or outdated — especially due to regional differences. I wanted to sound natural and local, not like a textbook. What it does

In the maker’s words, at launch

Happy Valentine's Day! I built a language learning app designed specifically for couples, where one partner helps the other learn a new language in a fun, personalized way. My partner is originally from China, and I wanted to learn Mandarin and Cantonese to speak to her family. But learning through other apps, I found many words sounded awkward or outdated — especially due to regional differences. I wanted to sound natural and local, not like a textbook. Instead of struggling alone, I thought why not learn together? Many of my couple-friends were in the same boat but had no real system and ended up frustrated. So I took the leap to work on Coupling full-time. Here's how it works! - Pick a word pack (e.g., everyday objects, hobbies, travel) - Your partner personalizes it with natural translations, recording their voice, or making relevant sentences. Assisted by AI - Learn your partner's words in bite-sized lessons, backed by spaced repetition - Stay motivated with real-life partner rewards, based on the Five Love Languages — little gifts, kind messages, or even offers to do household chores - Once you're comfortable with the words, you can chat in the app to practice what you've learned Building Coupling took a lot of experimentation and iterations. It started as a flashcard webapp that you could invite a partner to make flashcards for you. I experimented with live interactive language games…or incorporating podcasts. I took a year off working at another startup and other projects before I arrived home to Coupling. In the midst of that I ported the project to Expo + React Native for app store distribution. My biggest lesson was that partners need clear guidance to contribute meaningfully. Now, learners request words, and Coupling walks partners through how to personalize them — with AI-powered assistance to make it easy. Now my partner and I have a working system, not just learning from each other but also showing appreciation for each other through little gifts and surprises. She’s helped me learn *thousands of words* in Cantonese and Chinese, while she picks up Vietnamese and advanced English words from me (mainly for the gifts ). The biggest moment was when her mom who doesn't speak English, visited last year, and said she finally felt connected to me now that I could communicate. If you're in a multilingual relationship or have tried learning a language, I'd love your feedback! It's available on iOS & Android: http://couplingcafe.com Thanks for reading! - Kevo

  • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

I was at FB/Meta from late 2013 to early 2023, mostly working in the compiler/runtime spaces. I got hit in the spring 2023 layoff wave. I immediately started making games in my newfound free time (a lifelong interest, and I even worked in AA(A?) back ca. ~2000), and in October 2023 I stumbled upon the idea of a roguelike pachinko/plinko game inspired by Luck Be A Landlord. Things snowballed quickly, I started talking to publishers, then worked like crazy through all of 2024, almost the hardest I've ever worked in my career, and launched the game in December 2024. It's sold…

i wanted to change the habit of reaching for my phone in the morning and doomscrolling away an hour so i built an app to help me. now i have to literally touch grass before accessing my most distracting apps the app is built in swiftui, uses the screen time apis provided by apple and google vision to recognise grass or not i'd love to get your thoughts on the concept.
