Created macOS app to help you keep your distance from your screen

Hey everyone, If you're anything like me, you spend a good chunk of your day (and night) on your computer. I often find that when I'm zoned in, my posture gets worse and worse and my face ends up being really close to the screen. And over a course of a workday, when I finally unplug, my eyes have a hard time focusing on things that are far away. This has become a big enough problem for me that I decided to create an app to help me keep my face far enough from the screen. Now, I could've gone with a simple notification with a timer built into it but, as with all reminder notification, they…

In plain words

FarSight is a macOS application that monitors screen distance using the camera to encourage better posture and eye health. When it detects a user's face too close to the screen for an extended period, it blurs the entire display to force them to move back. Designed for people who spend long hours at computers and experience eye strain or posture problems from leaning in, the app takes a more active approach than typical reminder notifications.

In the maker’s words, at launch

Hey everyone, If you're anything like me, you spend a good chunk of your day (and night) on your computer. I often find that when I'm zoned in, my posture gets worse and worse and my face ends up being really close to the screen. And over a course of a workday, when I finally unplug, my eyes have a hard time focusing on things that are far away. This has become a big enough problem for me that I decided to create an app to help me keep my face far enough from the screen. Now, I could've gone with a simple notification with a timer built into it but, as with all reminder notification, they soon become noise for me and I end up just dismissing it. I needed something to actively force me to move back. Which is where FarSight comes in. It uses your camera to gauge your distance and blurs the entire screen if it detects that you are getting close enough for a certain period of time. I made it so that it won't be extremely annoying and disruptive (e.g. blurring the screen every time you cross the line) but just enough of a nuisance to be helpful. I've been using it everyday since creating it and it's definitely helped me with eye strain, double vision, and surprisingly, my posture as well. I'm not sure if I'll keep it free forever but I wanted to release it first to ask for feedback. I only have the app in MacOS so if it has enough interest, I'll invest into making Windows counterpart. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/farsight-restore-your-eyes/id6... Also, in case anyone is wondering, no data is collected and the snapshots during the app's usage are not saved but only used to calculate the distance.

  • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

I went down the rabbit hole on a side project and ended up building this: Strange Attractors(https://blog.shashanktomar.com/posts/strange-attractors). It’s built with three.js. Working on it reminded me of the little "maths for fun" exercises I used to do while learning programming in early days. Just trying things out, getting fascinated and geeky, and being surprised by the results. I spent way too much time on this, but it was extreme fun. My favorite part: someone pointed me to the Simone Attractor on Threads. It is a 2D attractor and I asked GPT to extrapolate it to…

Hey all, I built this. It’s not trying to capture every autistic experience (that’d be impossible). It’s based on my own lived experience as well as that of friends on the spectrum. I'm trying to give people a feel for what masking, decision fatigue, and burnout can look like day-to-day. That’s hard to explain in words, but easier to show through choices and stats. I'm not trying to "define autism". I’ve gotten good feedback here about resilience, meds, and difficulty tuning. I’ll keep tweaking it. If even a few people walk away thinking, "ah, maybe that’s why my coworker struggles in those…
