daegun

An all-in-one text engine in Rust that depends on nothing

What it does

Putting text on screen usually means gluing four libraries together: one parses fonts, one shapes scripts, one rasterizes, one subsets. daegun is all four in a single crate that depends on nothing. It shapes Arabic, Devanagari, Khmer and 90+ more scripts, rasterizes on the CPU or the GPU, and cuts an 8 MB font down to 12 KB. Unsafe is forbidden in every parser and the compiler enforces it. A C ABI sits beside the Rust API, not behind it, and the whole thing is no_std.

daegun is an all-in-one text engine for Rust: no_std, zero dependencies, with a C ABI beside the Rust API.

daegun turns a font file and a string into positioned, rasterized glyphs. It parses TrueType and OpenType, shapes complex scripts, breaks and lays out lines, hints, rasterizes on the CPU or the GPU, and subsets a font down to the glyphs a page actually uses. One crate does all of it, and a C ABI sits alongside the Rust API rather than behind it. There are no dependencies at all, so the supply chain is the Rust compiler and nothing else. The parsers and the shaper forbid unsafe code outright, enforced by the compiler rather than by discipline: a font file is data from strangers, and daegun treats it thatfrom dg.calia.cc

    Ad Astra – scripting language platform for Rust2024 · github.com · ▲6

Ad Astra is a dynamically typed scripting language designed for embedded use in Rust programs. It belongs to the same category as languages like Rhai and Rune, where developers expose APIs implemented in Rust to a dynamic, domain-specific scripting environment, enabling a rapid edit-compile-run cycle. Informally, you might think of Ad Astra as a "Lua" for Rust. Such systems have many applications, including the development of plugin platforms based on scripts for video game engines. Ad Astra primarily focuses on ergonomics, both for the scripting platform developer and the script user: 1.…

DiagramIDE – a Rust GUI to Compose Diagrams via Tcl, Prolog, and PikchrFeb 2026 · github.com · ▲6

I built DiagramIDE because I wanted a more modular way to handle diagramming-as-code. It’s a Rust-based GUI (EGUI) where you can split logic, data, and rendering into separate windows. Instead of one giant DSL file, you can script components in Tcl, define relationships in Prolog, and pipe the results into Pikchr for the final render. Fair warning: it’s an early alpha and still quite rough around the edges. I’ve been dogfooding it for my own work so it’s definitely functional but expect unexpected. Shortest way to try it out is a compiled binary release:…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
