DesktopAudio

Hi all, I built DesktopAudio to be able to capture any and everything my mac plays for my own purposes (and for friends asking for help to record podcasts and youtube video audio). A fun thing did happen while I was preparing everything for the ProductHunt launch (it is live right now), in order to get some audio into the video, I recorded the video using macos built-in recorder (cmd+shift+5) + desktopaudio (for the audio part) and then merged the two files :) I think I may be working on a tool to merge video, audio and voice over (if possible my/your own voice) but that's for later,…

DesktopAudio launched on August 2, 2026 with 4 votes, #2,153 of 23,273 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches.

What it does

DesktopAudio records whatever your Mac is playing and saves it as an m4a on your Mac. Podcasts, live streams, webinars, calls: if you can hear it, you can keep it. Local always: local recording, local files, no cloud, no account. It never touches your microphone and never asks for mic permission. It's also the missing half of macOS screen recording: Cmd+Shift+5 captures video but no system audio. Run DesktopAudio alongside it and you have both. $19 one-time. No subscription.

Heeey! I built a macOS copilot that has been useful to me, so I open sourced it in case others would find it useful too. It's pretty simple: - Use a keyboard shortcut to take a screenshot of your active macOS window and start recording the microphone. - Speak your question, then press the keyboard shortcut again to send your question + screenshot off to OpenAI Vision - The Vision response is presented in-context/overlayed over the active window, and spoken to you as audio. - The app keeps running in the background, only taking a screenshot/listening when activated by keyboard…

RM2000 Tape Recorder makes it stupid simple to grab audio samples and organize them: just record the sample, give it a title (and maybe some tags), and it is saved neatly into a directory of your choosing. I'm a huge datahoarder and have always appreciated tools / services like PureRef and Are.na which help me make sense of everything I collect. Those services concern themselves with images and video - I wondered, why can't the same be done with music and audiofiles? I actually got the inspiration for the filenaming scheme from the Emacs Denote package - every sample is saved in the…

Hi HN, I made a mac desktop app which your coding agent can connect to and use ur mac to do the recording instead, as well as edit the video, add background music, clone my voice, and publish it to a bucket so ur agent can just automatically make and rerecord tutorials. I've ran into this issue a bunch in the past where I've needed to record a bunch of tutorials on how my software or specific features I've made work (mainly for documentation), and I've constantly needed to re-record things bc of new features or new UI, which has taken so much time. You can go back and a quick run through and…

  • Hey HN, We recently built Clipto. It’s a tool that lets you search over terabytes of video, audio, and images on your computer, without relying on the cloud. Motivation: we probably all had this similar experience, we know a moment exists in a video or audio, but finding it takes hours scrubbing the timeline. You can send all the media to process in the cloud, but it’s slow, expensive and raises privacy concerns. So we decided to build our own on-device media search engine. How it works (high level): 1. We ingest video, audio, image; normalize formats via ffmpeg; run content analysis to…

  • Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…
