Explore remote SQLite databases over SSH
Hi! As a big fan of SQLite, I always found the tooling to explore remote databases a bit lacking. Current solutions involve running an extra service in the remote host and exposing a port to access it. I built a small web app that can explore remote SQLite databases without having to run any service on the remote, you just need SSH. It works by sending sqlite3 CLI commands over a multiplexed SSH connection. The commands use the "-json" flag from the sqlite3 CLI. This basically turns the SSH connection into an JSON API for the remote SQLite database. The project is hosted on GitHub[0] and I…
In plain words
This web application allows users to explore SQLite databases on remote servers through SSH without installing additional services. It works by sending sqlite3 CLI commands over a multiplexed SSH connection and converting the JSON output into an accessible interface. The tool is designed for developers who need to query remote SQLite databases and prefer a simpler setup than traditional client-server solutions that require extra services running on the host.

The project is hosted on GitHub[0] and I wrote a blog post with more details about the project and how it works[1]. I'm still exploring multiple ideas and implementations details, but feedback is more than welcome. I've seen some interests in (simulation) video games here on HN so I thought I'd share a short version of our story. More than 6 years ago, me and my friend from university were playing around with an idea of making a game we always wanted to play. We worked on it on weekends but the progress was quite slow, especially due to so many dead ends and wasted effort. Eventually however, we solidified our direction and decided to take the risk to resign from our well paid SWE jobs and work on it full time. It took more than a year but yesterday we have finally released it on Steam:…
