Flocking Simulator (Boids)

After 20+ years of being fascinated by Craig Reynolds’ boids, I finally built my own flocking simulator this weekend. Added some simple predator/prey gameplay—curious how far this idea can go.

Flocking Simulator (Boids) launched on April 29, 2026 with 3 votes, #2,709 of 21,247 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches.

What it does

This is a real-time interactive simulation based on the classic boids flocking algorithm, originally introduced by Craig Reynolds. Watch hundreds of agents come to life using just three simple rules: Alignment (match direction) Cohesion (stay together) Separation (avoid crowding) What makes it fun? You can actually play with the system. 🔹 Add attractors and repellers 🔹 Observe emergent patterns in real time 🔹 See chaos turn into organized motion

Play and experiment with a flocking simulator featuring boids, swarm intelligence, and predator-prey mechanics. Build formations, test behaviors, and explore emergent AI movement in real time.

Based on the original Boids simulator by Craig Reynolds, this interactive demo allows you to experiment with flocking behavior and predator-prey interactions. Build formations, test behaviors, and explore emergent AI movement in real time. A info · S bounded · D debug · Space reset world. Three flocks: red / green / blue boids (flock with same color only). Hold 1 , 2 , or 3 while adding with Z to pick species. Ctrl +click (or drag) places an obstacle at the pointer (up to 50). Z / X / C + click: add boid / predator / object. Same + right click: remove first. No keys + mouse: arrival / departure (boids). Predators must hold contact within catchRadius for catchStruggleMs (grapple) before the…from vizbull.com

  • Swarm – Program a colony of 200 ants using a custom assembly languageMar 2026 · dev.moment.com · ▲190

We built an ant colony simulation as an internal hiring challenge at Moment and decided to open it up publicly. You write a program in a custom assembly-like (we call it ant-ssembly) instruction set that controls 200 ants. Each ant can sense nearby cells (food, pheromones, home, other ants) but has no global view. The only coordination mechanism is pheromone trails, which ants can emit and sense them, but that's it. Your program runs identically on every ant. The goal is to collect the highest percentage of food across a set of maps. Different map layouts (clustered food, scattered,…
