Folio V1

Local-first novel writing, now on every desktop

What it does

Folio is a free, local-first desktop writing studio for novelists. Draft and organize Markdown chapters, plan beats and story threads, build a Codex, track revisions and snapshots, and export to PDF, DOCX, EPUB, Markdown, or TXT. Muse provides manuscript-aware AI through fully local Gemma or your own cloud API keys - while your book remains on your disk. Available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Local-first writing app for novelists. Track threads, plan beats, stop losing subplots. Your manuscript stays as plain Markdown on your disk.

Folio gives novelists the tools developers have had for decades — structure, revision, fast navigation, AI assistance — without the spreadsheet feel of writing apps. Your manuscript stays in plain Markdown on your disk. Some chapters back, one Bulkington was spoken of, a tall, newlanded mariner, encountered in New Bedford at the inn. When on that shivering winter's night, the Pequod thrust her vindictive bows into the cold malicious waves, who should I see standing at her helm but Bulkington! Know ye, now, Bulkington? Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea.…from folio-dark-muse.com

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
