Gonewatch
Get emailed if a cron or backup never ran
What it does
Most uptime tools ping a public URL. Gonewatch does the opposite: your job pings us. I built it after a nightly database backup failed silently — the script never started, so it never emailed me. You create a monitor, paste a curl (or uses: gonewatch/heartbeat@v1) at the end of a successful run. If the next heartbeat never arrives, you get a Down email. Paid plans can post to Slack and remind you if it stays Down.
Know when cron jobs, backups, and pipelines stop firing. POST a heartbeat, get email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, a GitHub Issue, or a Linear ticket if a window is missed, and chart optional JSON.
Register expected events, POST a heartbeat when they succeed, and get email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, or a GitHub Issue if a window is missed — before users notice. Optional JSON becomes last values and charts. # After your job succeeds curl -fsS -X POST https://gonewatch.com/api/heartbeat/YOUR_TOKEN \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"duration_ms":184320,"bytes":2147483648,"tables":42}' No agent. No SDK. Optional JSON for charts. A missed heartbeat becomes an overdue window, then a Down alert — before your users notice anything broke. The same POST can include JSON — duration, size, row counts, or your own keys. Gonewatch keeps top-level scalars and turns them into last values,…from gonewatch.com

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
