Hacker News without leaving your terminal

I put this together since I find myself switching away from the terminal to see if anything new popped up in HN. There might be similar ones out there, didn't bother looking. It was a quick experiment, which might end up with a few more features.

Hacker News without leaving your terminal launched on December 26, 2011 with 25 votes, #27 of 254 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 14 years on.

In plain words

This is a command-line tool that brings Hacker News directly into the terminal, eliminating the need to switch applications to check for new posts. Built for developers who prefer staying within their terminal workflow, it displays Hacker News content in a text-based interface. The creator developed it as a quick experiment to reduce context switching and plans potential future enhancements.

HN is great for the links people share, but a big part of the value I get comes from reading the discussion around them. I realized I was always opening the article in one tab and the comments in another, constantly switching back and forth. I figured there was probably a simpler way, so I threw together this userscript to merge the two. 1. Clicking a link from Hacker News opens the article with a side panel containing the discussion. It doesn't require your credentials, is resizable, and is easy to tweak if you want to customize it. 2. If you land on an article that has previously been…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
