In plain words

How did your computer reach my server?" is a network visualization tool that traces and displays the path data takes from a user's device to a web server. Launched in December 2023, it allows people to understand internet connectivity and routing in an interactive way. The tool is useful for anyone curious about how internet infrastructure works or for educational purposes in learning about network protocols and data transmission paths.

Seems like this hit the Hacker News front page again, and my server's having some trouble serving all of you. I made some hotfixes and the traceroutes seem to be working again, but you might need to be a bit patient :) This part of the page is still loading while I wait for the above traceroute to load. To reach this website, your computer sent some packets across the Internet. If we’re curious what that path was, we can run a tool to generate a traceroute — a rough list of every server your packets touched to reach their destination. To build this website ( source code on GitHub ), I wrote my own traceroute program called ktr ( also open source ) that can stream results in real time while…from how-did-i-get-here.net

Hey everyone, I've made this website that I hope can help some people. The original inspiration comes from being tired of having a specific site (and finding it!!) that serves my needs for a single purpose. Straight forward tools, no fuss. The objective is to be fully in-browser, no login and if possible without contacting a remote server. PGP Key Analyser - Analyze PGP keys directly in your browser - finally I can see the infos without having to download the key on my device Proton Date - Check ProtonMail account creation dates - pretty niche I admit Favicon Hash - Generate website favicon…

Hey all, wanted to share my recent weekend hack project. I wanted to improve upon the existing space for looking up information about IP addresses and ASNs. The backend is written in Rust and pulls BGP data every 8 hours from the RIPE RIS project to build up a routing table and also adds geolocation information. The frontend is using React and Tailwind. Would love any feedback or suggestions on what to improve.

  • Hi HN! I’m proud to share that we have built a real 3rd party iMessage client for Android. We did it by reverse engineering the iMessage protocol and encryption system. It's available to download today (no waitlist): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beeper.ima and there's a technical writeup here: https://blog.beeper.com/p/how-beeper-mini-works. Unlike every other attempt to build an iMessage app for Android (including our first gen app), Beeper Mini does not use a Mac server relay in the cloud. The app connects directly to Apple…

  • Hey! I made Heynote entirely for my own use case. For many years, I always had an Emacs instance running with the scratch buffer open, even long after I had abandoned Emacs as my programming editor in favor of more recent IDE:s. The simplicity of having just one big scratch buffer appeals to me, but I still want to separate the different things I jot down somehow (without using tabs or similar). Previously, my solution was to insert a bunch of blank lines between the notes, but hitting C-A would still select the entire buffer. That's why I came up with the concept of "blocks", which turned…
