How I created and promoted my first OS X app for $304

A behind-the-scenes look at how I created and promoted my first OS X app, without writing a single line of code.

How I created and promoted my first OS X app for $304 launched on March 20, 2014 with 5 votes and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 12 years on.

You should learn to code if you want to know how to code . If you want to make apps , there are other, more direct paths to take. Some of my favorite apps are the most basic. I use Quiet to block out off background applications and Freedom when I don’t want to be distracted by the internet. Neither are complicated apps. I've wanted to make my own OS since I started programming. Now, 5 years later, I did it (kind of). Sure, it is really basic, has very little functionality, but I made it and I'm proud of that. Oh, and I'm just 16 btw.

It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
