I created this land use visualisation for the Netherlands

Last weekend, I tried creating an original visualization of something on many minds in my home country the Netherlands: land use. Much of our discussion revolves around land use—housing crisis, sustainable farming, solar energy—it's all about the land. To illustrate this, I created a map where each hexagon represents 0.06% (26,647 hectares) of land in the Netherlands. The color indicates the type of land use.

I created this land use visualisation for the Netherlands launched on June 6, 2024 with 78 votes, #657 of 4,672 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 2 years on.

In plain words

This interactive visualization displays land use across the Netherlands using a hexagonal map, where each hexagon represents 26,647 hectares and is color-coded by land type. Created to illustrate ongoing Dutch debates around housing, sustainable farming, and renewable energy, the tool provides an accessible way to understand how the country's territory is allocated across different uses. It offers a data-driven perspective on resource distribution in the Netherlands.

From the sources

A data visualization project that shows the distribution land use in the Netherlands.

This webpage uses hexagons to visualize land use across the Netherlands. Each hexagon represents a small fraction of the country's land, roughly 0.06% or 26.647 hectares. The color of each hexagon corresponds to a specific type of land use. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, facing a constant challenge: balancing competing demands for its limited land. Despite concerns about space, the Netherlands has more solar panels than the entire continent of Africa. Yet, solar parks occupy only one hexagon on the entire map. With growing pressure on space, how can we ensure there's room for affordable housing, nature, and productive agriculture? This…from koenvangilst.nl

  • Land use visualization for European countries2025 · onsland.koenvangilst.nl · ▲23

We have another election coming up at the end of this month here in the Netherlands, and how we use our limited land is a hotly debated topic. Last year also I shared this animated hexagonal map of Dutch land use. I've now expanded this to include several more European countries, so you can see what makes Dutch land use so special - or not. If you want to help add more countries, I'd appreciate PRs on GitHub. The map rendering is already there, it only requires land use data which can be found in the SQLite database (at least for EU countries). Github:…

Hi HN, I made a web game to practice country locations a while ago and HN liked it, so I thought I'd post my updated version as well. As for how the game works and feels, I'd really recommend you checking it out for yourself, it's free, no signup, no ads. The tech stack is Vue + ts + Tailwind/Daisy for the looks. The learning algorithm is a slight modification of the ts version of FSRS. If you have anything to add, it's open source as well (https://github.com/koljapluemer/learn-worldmap), although not well documented yet. In the end it's just a little sideproject,…

  • An interactive map showing live wind farm generation in Great Britain2023 · renewables-map.robinhawkes.com · ▲245

GB Renewables Map an energy experiment created entirely in my free time (day job is visualisation at Octopus Energy). It's an interactive map showing live generation for major wind farms in Great Britain, showing what each wind farm is generating both now and in the past, and where that generation is physically located. Animated weather data is from WeatherLayers and shows current and historic wind conditions on the map, providing context to wind generation around the country. History mode allows you to go back in time and see wind generation and weather conditions for a particular date and…

I made a web app to generate 3D models of real places on earth from land cover and elevation data. Click anywhere on the map to get a polygon, and then click "generate". It should work at most scales, but if your watershed or region selection is too large, the result can be less exciting because it's so flat. As a warning, the 3D models can sometimes be too much for my phone. It's nicer on desktop. I'm still working better on mobile support. The land cover data I'm using gives a cool effect, but at some point I'd like to add in global imagery and clouds. The backend is a Python thread…

  • Visualising Rising Temperatures for the Netherlands2023 · koenvangilst.nl · ▲6

Something I've been working on this weekend: visualising climate change in the Netherlands. https://koenvangilst.nl/blog/rising-temperatures I particularly liked the heatmap with monthly temperature data since the 1900s. It's a lot of scrolling, but you can clearly see that climate is accelerating since the '90s.
