In plain words
This is a documentation of a cycloidal gearbox design built by a young engineer. The project showcases the mechanical principles and construction methods behind this type of gearbox, which uses a cycloidal motion to achieve high gear ratios in a compact form. The work is available on GitHub, making it accessible to others interested in mechanical engineering, gear design, or DIY engineering projects. It stands out as a practical demonstration of advanced mechanical concepts executed by someone at the secondary education level.

This is my cycloidal gearbox I built, and the python script I created to generate it! A cycloidal gearbox is a type of gearbox that allows you to turn rotational speed into torque. This gearbox was a handcranked gearbox specifically meant to test the validity of the python cycloidal generator. It had a gear ratio of 1:9. This design was a micro cycloidal gearbox with a ratio of 1:9, meant to only take up the same footprint as a NEMA 17. Due to the tight tolerances needed for a small cycloidal drive and the lack of precision offered by 3D printing, this design did not work. This gearbox was the first working version to run on a NEMA 17. It has a larger footprint compared to Version 2…from github.com

I Designed and Built an eBike2022 · endless-sphere.com · ▲304This post shows and explains the design of the eBike I built myself. I decided to post it on this specific forum because this is where it all started, by stumbling on another post, as mentioned in my entry.

Long time reader, first time self-promoter. I'm a bicycle mechanic that figured I could make the process of bicycle wheelbuilding faster, more accurate and more satisfying. I do it by sampling digital indicators, rendering the data in useful ways, and injecting domain-specific insights. The UI interaction happens by foot pedal so my paradigm retains the traditional way of working with your hands.
Web page that parses and explains the label on a bike tire2022 · fahrrad-tools.de · ▲631History: Last year I had to replace the tire on my bike, and I was surprised how difficult it was to find a suitable new tire. There were a lot of numbers written on the casing, so I googled what they meant. In the end I was successful, but I didn't want to do the same work again for the next bike after I've forgotten the details. So I wrote this website. Technically, the web page is kept very simple, no frameworks, no templates, no website builder. It uses HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, and it privides a responsive layout for mobile usage. I'm happy to receive feedback. If you have tried the…
Exhibit and Site on Mechanisms for Students2025 · mechanical-library.org · ▲28Just finished a super-nerdy amateur hobby project: An exhibit and website to show kids how cool mechanisms are! Sadly, kids don't get much tangible experience with machines anymore. Ideally, this exhibit will inspire some to explore engineering, even if they are not "book learners". The website provides content to back up the exhibit, with videos and 3D printing files. The project is inspired by engineering exhibits from the past. Check out the research page for more. The project will be open-sourced to enable people to make their own and extend it. If you want to collaborate, LMK. --Steve

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Clipto MCP▲655Hey HN, We recently built Clipto. It’s a tool that lets you search over terabytes of video, audio, and images on your computer, without relying on the cloud. Motivation: we probably all had this similar experience, we know a moment exists in a video or audio, but finding it takes hours scrubbing the timeline. You can send all the media to process in the cloud, but it’s slow, expensive and raises privacy concerns. So we decided to build our own on-device media search engine. How it works (high level): 1. We ingest video, audio, image; normalize formats via ffmpeg; run content analysis to…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…
