I made a mobile app that turns your step count into a race
I just launched my first-ever mobile app. It’s called STEPRACERS, a game where you compete with friends by tracking your steps. The idea came from someone close to me who completely changed their life by focusing on their health. Every night, they’d send me their step count - a small, daily ritual that became a powerful reminder of progress. So I turned it into a game. It’s fun. It’s simple. And it might just push you to hit your 10k steps a day.
I made a mobile app that turns your step count into a race launched on June 9, 2025 with 5 votes and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.
What it does
Launch a branded company step challenge with live leaderboards, department rivalries, and a big-screen event view. Employees race on the free iOS & Android app — also great for friends and communities.
StepRacers turns your team's daily steps into a live, branded walking race — departments battling on a big-screen leaderboard, powered by an app your employees will actually open. Nobody rallies around a pamphlet. Give departments something to win and the whole office starts taking the stairs. Marketing vs Engineering vs Sales. Live rankings on the office screen mean the challenge promotes itself — in Slack, at standup, by the coffee machine. Across StepRacers activity, participants average +2,000 daily steps . You get live participation and standings instead of waiting for an end-of-program spreadsheet. Only step counts are shared — no GPS, no health data , nothing an employer shouldn't…from stepracers.com

Steps: Workout & PedometerMar 2026 · getsteps.app · ▲98Hey HN, I'm a solo developer and I built Steps: Workout & Pedometer, an iOS pedometer and workout tracker. Last week, two German iOS publications wrote about the app. I didn't pitch them. I didn't send a press release. I didn't even know it was happening. I woke up to a spike in downloads, checked the analytics, and traced it back to their articles. That coverage pushed the app past $1,000 in sales. I still have no idea how they found the app. I'm wondering if anyone here has experience getting featured in publications, whether organically or through outreach. What worked for you? Any tips…

Fitocracy, an RPG for fitness2011 · xkcd.com · ▲102My cofounder and I have been working on a site called Fitocracy (www.fitocracy.com), which is a social game for fitness. The idea was very much inspired by our experiences growing up as nerds playing video games, later on discovering weightlifting, and drawing the parallel between working out and "leveling yourself up." XKCD has a pretty well known comic to this effect: http://xkcd.com/189/. We find that the metaphor of workout out as leveling up in a video game resonates with quite a few people, so Fitocracy is an attempt to bring that to life. On Fitocracy, tracking your workouts earns you…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
