I wrote a book on how to make iOS/Android apps with Ruby on Rails

Hi all! Joe Masilotti here. After 2+ years my book, "Hotwire Native for Rails Developers", is finally available for sale. It contains everything I know about building, shipping, and maintaining iOS and Android apps with Ruby on Rails and Hotwire Native. Always with one simple goal in mind: making it easier for Rails developers to build mobile apps. The book teaches you how to: - Build your first Hotwire Native apps on iOS & Android - Add navigation, modals, and native tab bars - Mix in native screens and components - Send and route push notifications - Ship to physical devices via TestFlight…

I wrote this over the last couple of weeks using Rails 3, Twilio and a variety of Gems, putting in about 2 hours per day. I'd love any feedback from the HN community on any aspects of the site (design, API construction, documentation, marketing, pricing which is TBD). On a related note: I have to say that I'm really flying with Rails 3. Typically I roll with Django, but have been super impressed with the Rails 3. Feels really clean, and there are some Gems that make the more mundane parts of the webapp construction fun and agile: Haml/Sass, blueprint, Fancy-buttons, Devise. I'll probably…

What I built: Bonjournal, a travel journal app - iOS app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bonjournal/id719266933) - web app (https://bonjourn.al) What and how I learned (in order of importance): * Ruby on Rails * - Michael Hartl's Ruby On Rails Tutorial - Railscast - Code School - Ruby Toolbox * Objective-C * - Nerd Ranch iOS Programming - NSScreencast - Code School - WWDC Videos (for performance improvements) - CocoaPods Rank (https://gist.github.com/luvtechno/8842522) And of course, a lot of Stack Overflow. • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

I made a built-from scratch Wayland Compositor to display any GUI app* in the terminal! I think there is a lot of unexplored potential in custom Wayland compositors, a lot of really cool things you can embed existing applications into! So, I started with embedding apps into the terminal because that is the easiest input/output (output is just utf-8 and I use the great `chafa` library for that, and I just read from stdin for the input). If you have any other ideas for cool Wayland compositors, let me know. I purposedly wrote 80% the app in Typescript to appeal to the most developers and…

Years ago I stumbled across a basic version of this concept and it stuck with me. I knew if I was ever going to take on such a project, it would need to be flawless, but without coding experience it was just another idea that would never happen. By the end of 2024, as AI coding tools exploded everywhere, I finally had a way to make it real. I started from zero knowledge and spent months collaborating with AI agents as a learning experience. Every pixel and every function went through me. The AI translated what I asked for into code, but every decision was human. I didn't use existing OS…
