- AWArroyo – Write SQL on streaming data2023 · github.com · ▲115
Hey HN, Arroyo is a modern, open-source stream processing engine, that lets anyone write complex queries on event streams just by writing SQL—windowing, aggregating, and joining events with sub-second latency. Today data processing typically happens in batch data warehouses like BigQuery and Snowflake despite the fact that most of the data is coming in as streams. Data teams have to build complex orchestration systems to handle late-arriving data and job failures while trying to minimize latency. Stream processing offers an alternative approach, where the query is compiled into a streaming…

- OAOpenSnowcat – A fork of Snowplow to keep open analytics aliveOct 2025 · opensnowcat.io · ▲77
I’ve been a long-time Snowplow user and unofficial evangelizer. I have deep respect for its founders, Alex and Yali, who I met a few times. What made me fall in love with Snowplow was that it was unopinionated, gave access to raw event data, and was truly open source. Back in 2013, that changed everything for me. I couldn’t look at GA the same way again. Over the years, analytics moved into SQL warehouses driven by cheaper CPU/storage, dbt, reproducibility, and transparency. I saw the need for a democratized Snowplow pipeline and launched a hosted version in 2019. In January 2024,…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
