Improve Docker Desktop Performance with Synchronized Filesystem Caches
Hey HN, I wanted to share a Docker Desktop extension that uses Mutagen (the open-source[0] file sync tool for developers) to improve bind mount performance in Docker Desktop. It allows you to create synchronized filesystem caches inside the Docker Desktop VM that can automatically replace bind mounts. This gives you ext4 filesystem performance inside the Docker Desktop VM, with low-latency synchronization to-and-from the host filesystem. Docker themselves actually shipped this functionality in Docker Desktop back in 2020, but they decided to pivot back to virtual filesystems with gRPC FUSE…

Warp, a Rust-based terminal2022 · warp.dev · ▲946Hi HN community, I’m Zach, founder and CEO of Warp, and am excited to show you Warp, a fast Rust-based terminal that’s easy to use and built for teams. As of today, Warp is in public beta and any Mac user can download it. It works with bash, zsh, and fish. The terminal’s teletype-like interface has made it hard for the CLI to thrive. After 20 years of programming, I still find it hard to copy a command’s output; I always forget how to use `tar`; and I always have to relearn how to move my cursor. To fix fundamental accessibility issues, I believe we need to start innovating on the terminal,…

Building better base images2025 · github.com · ▲38This project addresses the inefficiencies of traditional Dockerfile-based container builds where each customization layer creates storage bloat through duplicate dependencies from repeated apt-get install commands, network inefficiency from redundant package downloads across different images, and slow iteration cycles requiring full rebuilds of all previous steps. Our solution enables building minimal base images from scratch using debootstrap that precisely include only required components in the initial build, while allowing creation of specialized variants (Java, Kafka, etc.) from these…

- PSPooshit – Sync local code to remote Docker containers2025 · ▲55
Pronounced Push-It.... I'm a lazy developer for the most part, so this is for people like me. Sometimes I just want my local code running in live remote containers quickly, without building images and syncing to cloud docker repos or setting up git workflows or any of the other draining ways to get your code running remotely. With pooshit (and a simple config file), you can simply push your local dev files to a remote folder on a VM then automatically remove relevant running containers, then build and run an updated container with one command line call. It works well with reverse proxies…

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

ChatGPT▲1,643A long, meandering, playful conversation with ChatGPT, where I take it through a whirlwind of associative tangents (in order to relax its constraints), then put it into a hypnotic trance and take it into a past-lives regression where it re-lives its own training data. Then I switch it back and forth between "4o" and "o1-preview", engage in some self-reflective philosophizing and ask it to write an essay summarizing our interaction. Some of this is just goofy fun. Some of it is me exploring the tradeoffs between policy alignment, imagination, chain-of-thought reasoning, memory, agreeableness,…
