Learn Awk with a terminal running in the browser

Interactive awk tutorial: learn to filter, extract and transform tabular data (TSV files) using a command-line interface in your browser.

Learn Awk with a terminal running in the browser launched on October 8, 2021 with 7 votes, #1,408 of 2,933 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 5 years on.

What it does

Make sure you’re comfortable with the Terminal Basics (e.g. ls , head , tail , grep ) before going through this tutorial. Awk is a power tool to help you filter, extract and transform data files on the command line. It is most commonly used with tab- and comma-separated files, where the idea is to apply a certain transformation to every line (and sometimes column) of a file. As you’ll see later in this tutorial, awk is actually a full-fledged programming language! Here we’ll reuse the orders.tsv file from the Terminal Basics tutorial ( head orders.tsv ), which contains take-out order data from Chipotlefrom sandbox.bio

An eBook with hundreds of GNU Awk one-liners2020 · ▲539

Hi, I recently published my ebook on GNU awk one-liners [1]. It starts from the basics of awk syntax and then discusses one-liner examples. There's a chapter on regular expressions as well. The github repo has the details on how to get the PDF version, all the example files and code snippets used in the book, sample chapters as well the markdown source used to generate the PDF. I made all my ebooks [2] free last month amidst the pandemic fears. These include GNU grep & ripgrep, GNU sed and three books on regular expressions (Python, Ruby, JavaScript). I'd appreciate your feedback and hope…

    SQLite query inside a Bash function2021 · ▲134

Part of the workflow for building my website is the generation of a table in tab-separated column format (.tsv). The source data is found in four other .tsv files. I use an SQLite query to perform a 4-way join and write out the new table. For convenience, I wrote a script that encapsulates the query inside a Bash function. The example below illustrates this technique. repertoire() { pushd $CMM_SOURCES/_data sqlite3 <<EOS .headers on .mode tabs .import category.tsv category .import composition.tsv composition .import concert.tsv concert .import program.tsv program .once repertoire.tsv…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
