3.1-405B: an open source model to rival GPT-4o / Claude-3.5
In plain words
Llama 3.1 is an open-source AI model released by Meta in three sizes: 405B, 70B, and 8B. The largest model, 405B, is designed to compete with leading closed-source models like GPT-4o and Claude 3.5. The suite includes upgrades to smaller variants, offering developers flexible options for building AI applications. Available on GitHub, these models represent a significant shift toward open-source alternatives for advanced AI capabilities.

From the sources
Meta is releasing three models: The new 3.1-405B and upgrades to their smaller models: 3.1-70B and 3.1-8B. If 405B is as good as the benchmarks indicate, this would be the first time an open source model rivaled the best closed models—a profound shift.

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…

Many years ago, I made VJ softwares (to mix live visuals in clubs) for unexpected platforms like the Game Boy Advance, the Playstation 2 and the Raspberry Pi. This year, I’m back with a new web-app: Pikimov. Inspired by Photopea (a free Photoshop clone), I created this web-based motion design & video editor as an alternative to After Effects, to fill empty void. It's free, without signup, without cloud uploads (your files stay on your machine), and your projects are not used for AI models training.
