In plain words

LuaGB is a Game Boy emulator built entirely in Lua, a lightweight scripting language. It allows users to play classic Game Boy games on their computer by emulating the original hardware. The project is designed for hobbyists and developers interested in emulation, retro gaming, or learning how emulators work. Written in pure Lua rather than compiled languages, it demonstrates that complex systems like game console emulation can be implemented in interpreted languages, making it notable both as a functional tool and an educational resource.

    Game Bub – open-source FPGA retro emulation handheld2025 · eli.lipsitz.net · ▲274

Hey HN, Over the past ~1.5 years, I built an open-source FPGA retro emulation handheld that can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. To my knowledge, there isn't an existing open-source FPGA emulator that can play physical cartridges like this. One of my main goals was to do all of the pieces myself, and be able to understand every component of it, so I designed my own PCB, wrote the firmware, wrote a Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulator for the FPGA (using the Chisel HDL), and designed a 3D-printed case. I detailed the design and development process in the…

This is a long-running personal project I've had to write an optimizing compiler from scratch. Everything was done by me, including the lexer/parser, SSA-based IR, high-performance data structures, and code generator. Originally I wasn't targeting the NES. It started as a scripting language, then it morphed into a C++ replacement, and then finally I turned it into what it is today. The large scope of the project and colorful history means it's still a little rough around the edges, but it's now working well enough to post.
