mercator

Weather, ocean & elevation data as value-encoded map tiles

mercator launched on July 12, 2026 with 4 votes, #6,023 of 24,623 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches.

What it does

Most weather and ocean APIs give you a value at a point. mercator gives you the whole grid as map tiles, with the physical values baked into the pixels and decoded on the GPU. So you change colormaps, switch to wind streamlines or contours, or re-scale, client-side, no refetch. One open-source SDK for MapLibre, Mapbox, Leaflet, OpenLayers, deck.gl and React. The tile format is well-documented, so you can decode it yourself and never get locked to our renderer. Transparent pricing, free tier.

Gridded earth data (weather, ocean, air quality, elevation) as value-encoded tiles, decodable in any WebGL shader.

Global weather forecasts, ocean state, air quality, and elevation in PNG pyramids, Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs, and value-encoded textures. Drop into MapLibre, Mapbox, Leaflet, OpenLayers, deck.gl, or your own renderer. Open SDK, paid data - no lock-in. Get up and running in your codebase: paste the prompt into Claude Code, Cursor, or any coding agent. Free up to 10k tiles/month; see pricing . Live: 10 metre wind from cycle 2026-09-06 18:00 UTC, rendered in your browser from value-encoded PNG tiles. Tile pyramid, single global PNG, Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF, and pre-colored preview. Pick the one that fits your stack. Standard catalog.json → collection.json → item.json . Crawl it with pystac,…from mercator.blue

  • Get any piece of Google Earth as a single normalized glTF 3D model2023 · github.com · ▲177

Google released an API in May to get fetch 3D Tiles of anywhere on Earth. Using this in standard 3D engines like Blender is tricky because (1) the tiles are in a geographic coordinate system (2) you get a lot of little tiles at varying quality levels I wanted to simplify this so all you need to do is get an API key, select a map region and a zoom level, and get one combined glTF file that you can throw into any engine. Especially if you're just prototyping and want to see how this data looks in your engine before investing in figuring out all the nuances of the API & coordinate system. (Note…

Hi HN, I’m building Corviont, a self-hosted offline maps appliance (tiles + routing + search) for edge/on-prem devices. Hosted demo (no install): https://demo.corviont.com/ Self-host (Docker Compose repo): https://github.com/corviont/monaco-demo Docs: https://www.corviont.com/docs What’s inside: - Vector tiles served locally (PMTiles) - Routing served locally (Valhalla) - Offline geocoding/search + reverse (SQLite Nominatim-based index) - MapLibre UI wired to the local endpoints After the initial image + data pulls, it runs fully…

This is a service I've built to provide equirectangular cloud maps of the whole Earth, updated every 3 hours, for free. It's based on infrared and visible light data from EUMETSAT, processed to enhance the clouds and try to reduce the impact of surface temperatures on the final image. I built it because it's surprisingly hard to find these kinds of images in a format that's useful to developers and hobbyists. I was building a 3D ISS tracker and wanted to include live clouds but couldn't find anything good, so I got sidetracked, and here we are.

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I might be the only SRE on Earth with his own bowling center. It's a more in-depth gig than you'd think. My family and I bought an abandoned 8-lane bowling center in the rural mid-west. In our small town there weren't many recreation options for families. You've heard of a food desert? This is an R&R desert. It had been abandoned for a good reason. The roof leaks, the electrical system was constantly surging, and my 70-year-old bowling equipment (still) doesn't work perfectly. The system that keeps your score is particularly interesting to me. It's the thing you watch during your game, but…

Over the past few months, our team has been building more and more slidedecks using web frontend technologies with coding harnesses like Claude Code, but a common complaint is to make even small edits we need to edit the code either manually or via the harness. To avoid this loop, I ended up creating Bento, a single HTML file with everything you need in a slide tool including animations and shared editing. There's no install or cloud login, everything works offline. The default deck is around 560 KB and it doesn't need to fetch anything once you got it. Open it in a browser and then you can…

  • A few days ago I found myself trying out GLM 5.2 and was really positively impressed. The capabilities and security I was getting from this LLM are similar to those I've gotten from models like Claude or GPT, and this really surprised me. But then I thought, "I wonder how it would work on a normal computer like mine," and above all, "I wonder if it would work without going into OOM on a computer like mine." So I started working with the help of agents to test this possibility. I started converting the model to int4, understanding MTP usage, and if possible implementing DSA for long context.…

Hello! For the last 2 months, I've been building OpenSEO. It's a user friendly UI wrapping the DataForSEO API which has high quality SEO data for keywords, backlinks, AI SEO and competitor research. Instead of paying $100+ per month, you buy DataForSEO credits and pay only for usage. The coolest thing about the project so far has been hearing about what people are building on top of it. People are using coding agents to quickly integrate with Google Search Console, Google Ads and building their own AI SEO and reporting features. Many were already building their own custom solutions around…
