I saw someone post these on reddit 4 years ago, and I really wanted to make them. I was surprised they didn't open source their code, so I rebuilt it. Lots of things I would do differently now haha, but anyway, figured someone here might find it interesting.

The Movie Iris project was something that I started working on during quarantine. I saw some cool visualizations on Reddit's r/dataisbeautiful and was inspired to start working on the project. Some other users had already done something like this - and I wanted to try my hand at is as well. This repo is my take on turning movies into still art. Effectively taking raw movie frames, compressing them to their core colors, and visualizing the color schemes of a movie. I wanted to see how movies evolve, as well as how directors intended for different colors to be prevalent across different scenes. I stumbled upon the color quantization problem while doing something related for work. I then found an interesting paper for which I could find no implementations online, and the thing went from "let's implement this paper" to getting pretty obsessed with the whole thing. It's at an early, eaaaarly stage. There's a lot of work to be done, and it's a memory hog, but generally speaking works quite well, and the output is for the most part very high quality, so I'm happy to share it as beta.
