My Book Making Probability So Easy That a Lemur Could Learn It

Probability involves a lot of extra-mathematical concepts and funny transforms. I have always had a hard time internalizing it. When I heard a couple years ago that Lemurs are actually capable of abstract math, that gave me a bit of motivation to try to finally conceptualize probability in terms of whole numbers, counts, geometric shapes, basically easy-to-remember mathematical primitives. This book might be interesting to folks interested in predictive science, research, or just anyone who may have taken probability or statistics and might like a refresher on some of the edges of these…

In plain words

This book explains probability concepts using simple mathematical foundations like whole numbers, counts, and geometric shapes rather than complex transforms. Written by Patrick Delaney, it targets people working in predictive science and research, as well as anyone seeking to better understand or refresh their grasp of probability and statistics fundamentals. The author approaches the subject through concrete, easy-to-remember primitives designed to make abstract probability intuitive.

I would love any feedback or questions that anyone may have. Thanks! Patrick Delaney

    Self-Published Book – “Data Science in Production”2020 · ▲172

Hi HN, Over the past 6 months I've been working on a technical book focused on helping aspiring data scientists to get hands-on experience with cloud computing environments using the Python ecosystem. The book is targeted at readers already familiar with libraries such as Pandas and scikit-learn that are looking to build out a portfolio of applied projects. To author the book, I used the Leanpub platform to provide drafts of the text as I completed each chapter. To typeset the book, I used the R bookdown package by Yihui Xie to translate my markdown into a PDF format. I also used Google docs…

  • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

Hi HN! I made many small web games in the past with Unity or Phaser. But this time I wanted to make something completely on my own. So I coded a basic game framework in plain JavaScript, and used it to make Almost Pong. This was a really fun project that taught me a lot about JavaScript, and I plan to make more minimalist games with this framework. Interesting fact: Almost Pong doesn't load any assets, all sprites and sounds are generated with code. Happy to answer questions, and please let me know if you have any feedback on the game. Thanks!
