Nihongo: The Kanji Update
Understand the elements that make up every kanji
Nihongo: The Kanji Update launched on July 10, 2024 with 127 votes, #567 of 5,184 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 2 years on.
What it does
It's a common misconception that each element of a kanji contributes a meaning to the overall character. Not true! In truth, elements each contribute in different ways. This update uses the true history of kanji to help users learn and remember them.
Japanese dictionary app for iPhone and iPad with kanji lookup, example sentences, flashcards, OCR photo lookup, and a Safari extension for reading Japanese.
Look up words just by taking a picture. No viewfinders or complicated interfaces, just take a picture and then tap on a word to look it up. Watch Photo Lookup In Action The Nihongo Safari Extension adds furigana or romaji to any webpage, anywhere on the web. Tap on any word to see its definition, right inside Safari. Tap on the definition to jump over to Nihongo and see example sentences, alternative spellings and more. Watch Safari Extension In Action I almost don’t use any other app. Everything is at one place - dictionary, flashcards, clippings, kanji learning and so on. And looking up a word by taking a pic is absolutely amazing. - TygerLu, App Store Review I highly recommend this app,…from nihongo-app.com

Many years ago, I made VJ softwares (to mix live visuals in clubs) for unexpected platforms like the Game Boy Advance, the Playstation 2 and the Raspberry Pi. This year, I’m back with a new web-app: Pikimov. Inspired by Photopea (a free Photoshop clone), I created this web-based motion design & video editor as an alternative to After Effects, to fill empty void. It's free, without signup, without cloud uploads (your files stay on your machine), and your projects are not used for AI models training.
