    Tailspin – A Log File Highlighter2023 · github.com · ▲139

There are multiple programs for working with log files, both inside and outside of the terminal. These tools are feature rich and functional and offer lots of control to the user. However, a lot of the time I found myself just opening raw log files in `less`. I enjoy the simplicity of quickly skimming through the logs, but it was difficult when the wall of text was in one color. For this reason, I created a command line tool called `tailspin` (the name is a take on the `tail` command) that did one thing: highlighting of log files. It is configurable, but requires no setup. It defaults to…

    I was tired of opening 2 tabs for every HN link, so I made a userscriptJul 2026 · github.com · ▲433

HN is great for the links people share, but a big part of the value I get comes from reading the discussion around them. I realized I was always opening the article in one tab and the comments in another, constantly switching back and forth. I figured there was probably a simpler way, so I threw together this userscript to merge the two. 1. Clicking a link from Hacker News opens the article with a side panel containing the discussion. It doesn't require your credentials, is resizable, and is easy to tweak if you want to customize it. 2. If you land on an article that has previously been…

    Search HN Favorites or Export to CSV/HTML2022 · github.com · ▲49

I wrote a JavaScript tool to search your HN favorites and export them to CSV or HTML. The JavaScript runs in your browser like a browser extension. It scrapes the HTML and navigates from page to page. Setup and usage instructions are in the file.

Open Source Bot That Summarizes Top Hacker News Stories Using GPT-32022 · github.com · ▲71

HN Summary is an open source bot which sumarizes top stories on Hacker News and publishes the summaries to a Telegram channel. Whenever a new story appears on the Hacker News API /topstories.json endpoint, this bot summarizes it (currently using OpenAI GPT-3 text-davinci-002) and sends the story title, summary, and url to the hn_summary channel on Telegram. The purpose of this project is to help build intuition on the capabilities of the current generation of large language models while making a broader swath of top Hacker News content more easily accessible. It could also serve as a…

  • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

Heya HN, I've been working on a reddit-like platform as my primary side project for the last few years. Doing a (very) soft launch today, mainly because I want to use it to encourage discussion of alternatives. How non.io works: 1. Free to browse, paid to interact. 2. Minimum subscription is $2 (though you can choose more). I take $1 to run the servers, everything left gets split evenly between everything you upvote that month. It's a simple model, but I hope it's a better one than the freemium model we've been relying on for the last few years. Fundamentally I feel like any ad-supported…
