In plain words
OKSolar is a color scheme based on the Solarized palette, redesigned using the OKLab perceptual colorspace for improved color accuracy and consistency. It is for developers and designers who use syntax highlighting and terminal themes. The scheme stands out by applying perceptual color science to make colors appear more balanced and uniform across different applications and lighting conditions.

tl;dr : This is a long post about what is basically a tweak to an already great color scheme. I went down the rabbithole of color theory because I was bored, and this is what I produced. If you just want the final result…you’re looking at it (this site uses the OKSolar color scheme). You can also skip to the end , or get a JSON file with the hex and OKLCh values for it here . I was a long-time user of Ethan Schoonover’s Solarized , an aesthetically-pleasing and very usable color scheme for the terminal and code editors. However, I found the contrast lacking, and I usually ended up tweaking the background and foreground colors to stand out a bit more. Solarized was developed using “precise…from meat.io

I made a new AI colorizer2022 · palette.fm · ▲472Hi HN, I’m Emil, the maker behind Palette. I’ve been tinkering with AI and colorization for about five years. This is my latest colorization model. It’s a text-based AI colorizer, so you can edit the colorizations with natural language. To make it easier to use, I also automatically create captions and generate filters. Let me know what you think. You can see some of my results on my reddit page: https://www.reddit.com/user/emilwallner/?sort=top
Simple algorithm and color space to generate diverse skin tonesAug 2026 · toneyalexander.github.io · ▲627Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

Color Palette ProNov 2025 · colorpalette.pro · ▲151In 2023, I tried building dynamic color theming by programmatically rotating HSL values. The results weren't good—garish combinations, inconsistent luminosity, completely unusable for UI work. That kicked off a two-year (sporadic) rabbit hole into color theory like Josef Albers' "Interaction of Color," perceptual color spaces (OKLCH vs sRGB), and effects like Bezold-Brücke. I learned that programmatic palette generation is genuinely hard. Nothing beats a trained eye. But I carried on anyway and made the Color Palette Pro. What it does: It generates 6 palette types (analogous, complementary,…

Penumbra, a perceptually optimized color palette based on natural light2022 · github.com · ▲267For this palette, I used recent advances in color science, which made perceptual design more accessible, to choose a set of colors (mainly for syntax highlighting) that have uniform luminance for less visually uneven, fluidly readable code, but at the same time maximally distinguishable hue and chroma. The background colors are based on natural (sun-)light and shade for a more pleasing look than equally neutral greys. For much more detailed info, including the construction, check out the repository. There’s also already a (bare-bones) VSCode extension, linked in the repository, but it could…

I made a thing! In 2014, I was holding a stack of iPhones and thought to myself: "Hey, if I had each phone display a playing card, I could click a button and they'd shuffle themselves" I pared that idea all the way down to this: trading cards made of e-ink displays. Right now, each card costs me about $20 each, but with only a bit more scale, I think I can get that down to $10. In doing this project, I learned how to design electronics and circuit boards. I learned Rust and wrote my first driver, I upped my CAD skills, 3D printed, and did my first resin casting. I generated the images on the…
