Optimize Databricks SQL
I launched my startup's Snowflake optimization product here about two years ago, and we've just released our second product: a Databricks SQL optimizer. The optimizations are basically kubernetes for data warehousing: we take over autoscaling and cluster selection to increase utilization without impacting latency. The scheduler is backed by ML models that predict runtime and capacity, which means we can run machines hotter than the providers can and thereby cut costs. ScratchDB – Open-Source Snowflake on ClickHouse2023 · github.com · ▲261Hello! For the past year I’ve been working on a fully-managed data warehouse built on Clickhouse. I built this because I was frustrated with how much work was required to run an OLAP database in prod: re-writing my app to do batch inserts, managing clusters and needing to look up special CREATE TABLE syntax every time I made a change. I found pricing for other warehouses confusing (what is a “credit” exactly?) and worried about getting capacity-planning wrong. I was previously building accounting software for firms with millions of transactions. I desperately needed to move from Postgres to…
PylarDec 2025 · pylar.ai · ▲502Hey HN! We're Hoshang & Vishal, the team behind Pylar - a governed access layer between databases and LLMs. We previously led data and AI and we kept seeing the same problem across teams using LLMs internally: agents are great with unstructured data, but the moment you want them touching your actual systems of record — Snowflake, Postgres, CRMs, product DBs — everything becomes fragile, risky, or outright unsafe. Two issues show up every single time: 1. Agents over-querying They don’t understand cost. They’ll happily generate queries that blow up your warehouse bill. 2. Accidental data…

I went down the rabbit hole on a side project and ended up building this: Strange Attractors(https://blog.shashanktomar.com/posts/strange-attractors). It’s built with three.js. Working on it reminded me of the little "maths for fun" exercises I used to do while learning programming in early days. Just trying things out, getting fascinated and geeky, and being surprised by the results. I spent way too much time on this, but it was extreme fun. My favorite part: someone pointed me to the Simone Attractor on Threads. It is a 2D attractor and I asked GPT to extrapolate it to…

Autism Simulator▲779Hey all, I built this. It’s not trying to capture every autistic experience (that’d be impossible). It’s based on my own lived experience as well as that of friends on the spectrum. I'm trying to give people a feel for what masking, decision fatigue, and burnout can look like day-to-day. That’s hard to explain in words, but easier to show through choices and stats. I'm not trying to "define autism". I’ve gotten good feedback here about resilience, meds, and difficulty tuning. I’ll keep tweaking it. If even a few people walk away thinking, "ah, maybe that’s why my coworker struggles in those…
