In plain words

Ouroboros is a decentralized packet network launched in 2020. It enables users to send and receive data across a distributed system rather than through centralized servers. The platform is designed for anyone seeking an alternative to traditional network infrastructure, offering peer-to-peer communication capabilities. Its decentralized architecture allows participants to route packets independently, reducing reliance on single points of failure or central authorities.

Computer networking is a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Configuration and management of TCP/IP networks is an endeavor that can only be performed by highly trained experts. When integrating new appliances or re-racking and restructuring existing hardware in a data center, it is invariably the networking side of things that causes the most headaches as a lot of it needs to be manually re-configured, even in cases where a lot of the services are virtualized. The objective of this project is to simplify the network protocol stack so that it doesn't require an army of prized experts to understand and configure the infrastructure to run tomorrow's applications. After watching too many "privacy" apps get subpoenaed or shut down, I wanted a communication tool that literally cannot be shut down because it has no servers to seize. Ouroboros is a Rust-based P2P stack with two modes: 1. Live sessions: Two peers connect directly using just a shared passphrase. The passphrase deterministically generates identical network parameters on both sides, so they can find each other without any coordination server. 2. EtherSync spaces: Async file sharing and messaging in encrypted "spaces" that sync via gossip protocol when peers are online. Key features: -…

Hi HN, we build an open-source operating system extension for orchestrating robot swarms fully decentralized. This first beta version allows you to create fully decentralized robot swarms. The system will set up a wireless mesh network and run a p2p networking stack on top of it, such that nodes can interact with each other through various abstractions using our SDKs (Rust, Python, TypeScript) or a CLI. We hope this is a step toward better inter-robot communication (and a fun project if you have a few Raspberry Pis lying around). Our mesh network is created by B.A.T.M.A.N.-adv and we’ve…

Hey folks. Last year I was fortunate enough to sign a deal to write a book with my favorite technical publisher, The Pragmatic Bookshelf. When I started out as an Engineering Manager many years ago, I found that there wasn't a huge amount of material that specifically and practically helped me understand how to do my job. When you learn to program there's all of these amazing tutorials, examples and guides, but what was there for new managers? In response to this, a couple of years ago I started a blog over at https://www.theengineeringmanager.com which got a decent amount of…
